Does anyone else think Rubin would be good for it?  They said he likes everything to be stripped down and everything, and that prevents over production

Rick did a great job resurrecting Johnny Cash. The last two albums were Johnny's finest in years.

Rick Rubin is one of my favourite producers, but I'm not sure I want to hear a U2 album produced by him. Unless U2 goes in an "Americana" direction a la TJT or R&H (which would essentially be a retread), I don't think it would work. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong.

I'd like to see Flood at the helm.

There will be no U2 album out by June 2010.

I have been a U2 forum fan longer than most here.  From the first "floated" date of a U2 release, it usually means at least one year - or sometimes two years for the actual release.

Right now they are floating June 2010.  What that really means is their wishful thinking motive is to have something on time for the Christmas and Thanksgiving rush by late 2010.

But the reality is that they will just shelve album plans, and just release a 360 DVD that time.

Then album will be pushed back and back and back.  November 2011 is a best-case scenario.

June 2010?  Not a chance in the world.  See you all in Anaheim instead.

Cheers,

J

I just hope they don't pull a POP and get married to a date and, unfortunately, release an album before it's ready.

Being the member of a forum for a long period of time means nothing to me. I've been listening to U2 since 1983 and have been a member of this board for just over a year.

I am well aware that the band has said many times that they have a new album in the wings, only to wait another 2-3 years for its delivery. That being said, I believe this time, things are different...

NLOTH was projected to be a double album and it had been the biggest wait for a U2 album (close to 5 years). Thus, none of us (including you and me) have any idea just how many songs they already have "ready" for another album.

Not to mention, the time they have off between tour legs right now is the same amount of time they had off when Zooropa was made; so they have proven that they can do it.

As well, the band's frequency of openness with regards to their intent with this album is far more explicit than in the past. It appears they are REGULARLY talking about it in the media, which leads me to believe they are pretty serious about getting it out fast.

And "Winter" was in Brothers yet it is not available for purchase, which begs the question: Are they saving it for the new album?

Who knows? The album might be out in June, it might not. But I wouldn't rule it out.

If by Rick Rubin you mean Brian Eno, sure.

I'm not sure why we would want a 'stripped down' record. U2's best work has come through the production work of Eno and Lanois. I don't think U2 should be able to look at a studio without those two in tow.

Hahaha. I suppose this is the subject of another thread, but they are essentially members of U2.

I'm trying to remain optimistic about the June 2010 release date, but I'm almost ready to agree with Jick ??? ??? ???

I'm thinking sometime during the tour, but not right at the start.  They can play some of the new tunes and get people hypred for the album release.

Consider this, though: (1) U2 have been talking about this album in very specific terms for almost a year, with a title and a lead single already announced. And (2) this is not the band's usual context for recording, which gives them as much time as they want and the luxury of pushing back release dates. They must know that, with the third leg starting in June, their options are either to release an album to supplement NLOTH for the third leg, or not plan to release anything at all (I mean, if they're not going to do it now with all this down time, they're not going to do it for another 3 years). So, given those options and the fact that they have apparently decided to go ahead and release an album, I'd say June is pretty realistic.

I doubt it'll be a full 10-song album, but maybe an EP or something, which would be fine with me, as long as it's good.

Eno and Lanois have been behind all of the best U2 records so I wouldn't object to them being involved again at all.

Definitely agree. Rubin's stuff is good, but I'm always far more intrigued to see what Eno/Lanois come up with.
