Cynicism is a reliable approach for a U2 fan these days.

I used to be optimistic but I got tired of being wrong all the time.

I am willing to bet my house nothing will be out by June.

Cheers,

J

And my prophecy comes true again.

Just like when I said there is no chance for Songs of Ascent.

Or when I said they won't play POP this your.

Or when I said Zooropa will be bundled with the Achtung boxed set.

Cheers,

J

And unlike when you said U2 would play 'no songs they haven't played so far' at the start of 2011 on the 360 Tour, or when you said that Even Better Than THe Real Thing would 'never open a concert again' after its first outing, or when you said that they would 'never' play Zooropa after it was rumored rehearsed, or when you said that HTDAAB would be U2's last album, or when you said that they wouldn't play unreleased songs in 2010, or when- ....you get the picture.

I'm still convinced they will just stuff the market with some reissues and compilations before releasing anything new.

I will have to commend you on being prophetic too.

We do have Achtung reissues with....

Zooropa!

Zoo TV Sydney!

Oh, the irony!

But isn't that what Zoo TV was all about?

Cheers,

J

^ I'm sure you can find more old threads about the next U2 album if you put your mind to it.  :)

No disrespect to you, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure those things out.    For that matter, I am surprised you would even think there would be an album in 2013.   Ill bet your bud Jick doesnt even think that is likely.

2013 will be 4 years since NLOTH, so i think the time will be ripe for a new album. It's usually 3 or 4 years between albums and after the commercial failure of NLOTH i think theyll take a tad longer

There is no rule about U2 needing to release every 4 years.

They are not immortal and grow older too.

And they get richer too, meaning less urgency to make money.

Besides, the money to be made nowadays with new albums is not what it used to be with downloadable music.

J

If money is the only reason they'd want to release a new album they should either quit or be a tour band from now on.

360 was pretty much that - touring to make money. They weren't touring a record, they were touring their Greatest Hits. The stage show reflected that in advance, they had decided NLOTH wasn't working and didn't want the visual identity of the tour to reflect a record they had clearly distanced themselves from.

That said, if they can release another great record and concept they should still carry on. But please, not as the karaoke U2 on 360 - we want the wonderful daring U2 back again!

I can't see U2 being a commercially viable chart act anymore or future releases creating the kind of buzz they once would have done. Bono tends to rub people up the wrong way these days which is a trend that has been steadily growing since he traded his integrity/mystery for a soapbox to police the world.

As a touring act they will be fine. so many people have grown up listening U2 and hearing songs from their youth or glory years in a concert setting will nearly always hit home, couple this with the bands live reputation and they have the reipe to keep pulling in the punters.

Personally I would like them to ease off from the guilt trip now, Bono has nothing left to say on that front that we dont already know and if I wanted more info I could go online.
In short, I can think for myself and dont need to be told that the world is crap after paying money to see a gig.

I think U2 now realise that they stumbled with the last album and reputation alone will not carry them anymore, which is why SOA is dead in the water and subsequent material has them second guessing their instincts.

I also notice that sometimes people attempt to undermine Jick's opinion or his predictions. I dont have an issue with anyone's opinion or their beliefs, but the fact is Jick is often correct or at least offering a well thought out alternative outcome to what we expect.

just saying..........

Yep. If they were working full out on it right now, 2012 might be possible. But I see them putting a full year of work into this next one. And they haven't even started yet, it seems like.

so you mean those 3 albums HAVENT been started? ha no but seriously i imagine theyll scrap 95% of all theyve done so far and start over. I do think ANOTHER comp with songs like maybe Soon, Mercy [studio], Winter, EBW may show up. Best case for those songs? We get EBW/Winter put on a new comp, with the other studio versions of new songs as b-sides to the EBW/Winter single
