Of course we also have to consider that this is the year 2010, even if they were planning an EP, SOMETHING no matter how small would have leaked by now. One thing is for sure, if NLOTH had been a massive hit or reached Viva La Vida-like fame, we would have promotional materials for Songs Of Ascent out right now.

Actually, if NLOTH were a massive hit, there would be no need to talk about Songs of Ascent. You'd still be getting singles off NLOTH.

If NLOTH had been a massive hit, it would have been easier to sell the idea of releasing a Zooropa-like album. But this is a capitalist society we're living in and the first thing that matters to record labels is $$$$. I know some of us here worship U2 like some sort of religion, but these are not luminary dieties, these are guys working within a corporate structure and think in those terms.

Consider my previously cited example. If Viva La Vida had done so-so, there would have been no Prospekt's March.

But, but, Prospekts March wasnt a great album with many different songs, just a few alternatives, an instrumental and a couple new songs. Songs of Ascent will have somwhat different and new material - or so it seemed.
Its annoying but your point is valid :)

I agree with your point on Prospekts March. Some on here raised the point of SOA possibly being an EP. Whatever the case, it seems more likely the guys will disappear for another half decade and return just in time to be considered even more irrelevant, when compared whatever new phad is in place by then.

U2 is extremely quiet these days - is it a good or bad sign? I would love to get some update as to the status of the next album....

Yeah i wanna know what they're up to as well! It's strange, i mean, there hasn't been any definite release date for anything, or even an answer for if they're actually going to release anything at all, and yet... i mean, they definitely HAVE been in the studio, haven't they? There have been at least a few news articles of the band being interviewed saying "we've been in the studio", "we've got about 7-9 songs so far", "i caught Edge working on an electronic version of winter", and even Edge describing the new album as having different influences, some electronic, and some acoustic!
... and now the release date seems to be getting further and further away, like its slipping through our fingers.  :(
So what's gonna happen? Are they just going to shelve the songs, like they did with the Rubin sessions?
I think it would be really sad if they didn't release the album, i know Bono always says they're gonna have a quick follow up and its not true, but this time, they've actually been in the studio! Considering u2 isn't as popular (or young) as they used to be, and you've got younger bands being more productive - Coldplay released a live album for free on their website recently, and apparently will release a new studio album by december of this year... if u2 takes another 4-5 years to make an album, it will be pretty sad... especially considering the 'rich, songwriting vein' they (apparently) hit last year, the (apparent) 40 songs they have left over from the recording sessions, and the fact they've actually been in the studio over the past couple of months!!!
Come on u2, you guys rock, just give us Songs of Ascent like you want to!!!!  ;D

Ever since ATYCLB it's been the same... Bono flashing the idea of quick follow up album, than 4 years of waiting (minus tourtime) for a new album.

Find yourselves other, better and more regularly available new music! There's quite a lot of it floating around.

Yes, you need more musical nourishment than U2.
