lj, to answer your question, smoking is definitely more accepted in Europe. I have a friend who complains about it all the time (much to my displeasure, mainly because it's getting old hearing her say that others should be respectful of her right to breathe). I personally don't smoke, but it's part of the culture here. You go to the pub, and you smoke with your drink, although you can no longer smoke in pubs in the UK, not sure about in Ireland. But I'd actually assume LS's theory that Ali's holding it for Bono. But I wouldn't be terribly surprised if she did, because it's much more acceptable in Europe.
