DIRTY DAY appreciation thread
« on: March 29, 2010, 12:37:32 PM »
Well, I LOVE Dirty Day... both musically and lyrically, I think is another one that shows what a POET Bono is: how he can articulate interior struggles by finding within himself those great lines of poetry.

Here's the full lyrics; the red is my favourite bit, but it's just such a BRILLIANT song.

I don't know you, you don't know the half of it.
I had a starring role. I was the bad guy who walked out.
They say be careful where you aim
Because where you aim you might just hit.
You can hold onto something so tight
You've already lost it.
Dragging me down, that's not the way it used to be.
You can't even remember what I'm trying to forget.

It was a dirty day, dirty day.
Looking for explanations I don't even understand.
If you need someone to blame, throw a rock in the air, you'll hit someone guilty.

From father to son, in one life has begun
A work that's never done, father to son.

(Love, it won't last kissin' time).
(Love, it won't last kissin' time).
(Love, it won't last kissin' time).

Get it right, there's no blood thicker than ink.
Hear what I say, nothing's as simple as you think.
Wake up, some things you can't get around
I'm in you, more so when they put me in the ground.

The days, days, days run away like horses over the hill.
-----------

Let's appreciate! :D

One of the few outstanding songs on Zooropa but I feel the sound will benefit from a remaster like the rest of the album.  The lines "You can hold onto something so tight, You've already lost it" has a certain resonance for me.

Bono channeling Bukowski.

What does that mean "kissin time"

I have heard people use that expression before but I couldn't figure out what they meant. Also, I think Bono sings something similar in Wire:
"any time your on the earth its kissing time." Are they related?

It's a phrase his father Bob Hewson used to use, "It won't last kissing time".  Something that's predicted to be short lived.

that's great to find so many Dirty Day lovers :D truly a powerful song.

mmh probably yes... and I'm sure they will get there sooner or later. Most-ALL-actually (?) of the '80s albums have gone through remastering, so I figure they'll get there too :)

Yep: those lines are actually very dear to me too. I find them true in lots of aspects and things that happened to me.

Great song and great remixes, too.

This song took on a lot of personal meaning for me late last year when a student of mine died.  :'(

The lyrics are great... I find the album version too restrained, but the live version from Sydney is amazing- maybe the best song on the dvd.

Album version is lacking in power for me, live its an absolute beast - great solo, killer harmonies, amazing lyrics by Bono and Hank.
