I agree with the way atu2 has transcribed it:
'Take 'em off, slip 'em in your pocket'.

This was right around the time Bono often talked about taking off the sunglasses when it was time to quite hiding from God.

Since this song is about honest prayer, "elevation" being a jewish prayer form, it really fits the song.
