Hawkmoon deserves more appreciation, as does the album.  :)

I know and I want to listen to it more, it's just that it doesn't sound that great.  This 2010 and so I want a 2010 sound.

I know what you mean.

But I usually go into songs I usually don't listen to while waiting for something new  ;)

God Part II sounded great in 1988.

God Part II sounds great in 2010.

I'm kind of ambivalent about God Part II.  On one hand, there is that sweet riff by the Edge that starts towards the second half ot the song.  On the other hand, even though I enjoy Rattle and Hum overall, this is the song that makes me kinda understand a lot of the criticism of the album and band at this point in their career because of the apparent hubris and self-importance in writing this song.  Also, it really doesn't move me or speak to me that much.

Actually, I thought I'd listen to it again as I wrote this post and I'm kinda rockin' out to it.   :D

I've always found the criticism of Rattle and Hum to be a load of garbage.  So what if Bono felt qualified to write a sequel to John Lennon song?  So what if Bono launches the album with a statement about stealing a Beatles song back?  So what if they collaborate with and cover Bob Dylan - and BB King?  At the end of the day the music speaks for itself and - in my opinion - Rattle and Hum is excellent.

Regarding God Part II, I like it that it comes as a sort of refutation to the songs that come before it.  It's kind of like an argument and shows us that the band is about to head out into another direction.  Bono said it best - it's the first song off of Achtung Baby.   And the lyrics are great.  I'll be playing the God Part II (Hard Metal Dance Remix) momentarily...

So here's one random-ish thing.
The song God Part 2 doesn't stick out in my mind In fact, when I'm listening to the album, I always think, What's the 14th song again? And then it comes on and I'm like, Oh right!
So if this song is so much like the songs on Achtung Baby,  I'm probably not going to remember that album very well when I hear it.

I have the same problem, EC. God Part II is just not that memorable to me either, though I won't skip when it comes on.
Trust me, you won't have that problem with Achtung Baby :D The songs on it will definitely stick out--One, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, UTEOTW....they're all very, very memorable. ;D

I disagree with most of the criticism but I can see where they're coming from with some of it.  I do enjoy Rattle and Hum quite a bit and like you said, the music speaks for itself.

My first theory was that no one liked it cause it was such a bad follow-up. :D

Hawkmoon 269 and Love Rescue Me are in my top 10 U2 songs.

Bono's voice in both these songs is, shall we say, perfect.
