I am an economic conservative and political realist, but if I was an American citizen I would have to think long and hard about voting for Republican party candidates. I would vote for a specifc Republican candidate if I approved of their positions, but there are aspects of the party's policy positions which I find unpalatable, such as the socially conservative and religiously motivated stances on stem cell research, abortion, and civil unions.
I certainly think that most most politicians are in it for themselves and I believe most would put their personal political careers before the interests of the country that they're supposed to serve.
I believe that the future is small government and community action and self reliance, and in that sense it's the Republicans who generally steal the march on the Democrats, although I accept that a lot of their rhetoric on that is self-serving.
Big central government control of the welfare state is coming to an end because it's just too costly and unsustainable. Individuals and their local communities are going to have to start doing things for themselves. My vision of a future society is where evey able bodied citizen contributes to the well-being of their country by either having a role in the market economy; the delivery of public services, either through the state or voluntary sector; or in community based work projects.
We literally cannot afford to tolerate criminals, bone idle scroungers, or tax avoiders/evaders any longer, as David Cameron says, we're all in this together. People will have to pay their fair share of tax, which in the future will be higher than in recent decades, and people will have to work for their benefits.
Well, I can dream out loud, can't I?
