Yeah, I think it was a majority of factors... Either way, it's a very depressing story. i try to ignore it when I listen to the music.

I agree with emalvick's comment that Elegantly Wasted was a good album that just wasn't popular. And it's tragic that the loss of interest resulted in a death. Not fair.

To be fair I don't think Michael killed himself because of the bands slipping popularity. He was a troubled guy, had a problem with drink/drugs, and the main thing was the tension with his wifes custody battle for her children with Bob Geldof (her ex husband). Bono himself said he was friends with both Geldof and Hutchence so he didn't want to get involved and thus hadn't spoke to Hutchence in a while. The bands slipping popularity may have added to his depression, but it wasn't the main factor.

So, Hutch wasn't auto-erotic asphyxiating himself then?

Well, I definitely doubt that it was that type of accident.  He was definitely depressed.  Listen to his solo album (released posthumously) and you'll hear the lyrics of a depressed man and not in that dark way that you can hear in dark music.  Maybe it's just coincidence, but you can hear a man giving up in some of those songs.  It's sad enough that I can't really listen to that album even though it is quite good.

I've heard the solo album and find it to be very dark, depressing, and gritty indeed. Take Slide Away for example, the song that Bono added vocals to... "I just want to slide away and come alive again."

I think there were some depressing lyrics on Elegantly Wasted and even Full Moon Dirty Hearts, though not that dark. "What can be found in this sweet damaged smile?... You look for love- you just get skin," in We Are Thrown Together, "I need a new way out of here" in Freedom Deep and quite a few more I can't think of now.

He took the easy way out, and ironically left Paula's former husband to bring up not just Paula's kids but his own daughter too.

Because contrary to what many warring parents may think, children are not a possession.  It was felt that Tiger Lily would be better off being brought up in a family with her blood half-sisters by a loving and responsible father.

My 2 year old is quite fond of new sensation. And i used to like these guys alot too. Not since zeppelin have a bunch white boys been able to rock AND groove like that. No offense intended
