Forum Performance - How You Can Help

I thought I'd mention that the primary way that performance could suffer on this forum is the amount of data that we keep on our servers. We remain committed to keeping the full history of the board available to you and we don't plan to change that.

The one thing that we all can do is keep an eye on the amount of private messages that each of us keeps. I know some of those contacts can be very meaningful while others are lighter in nature. If you have the time and inclination, and you know that you don't need to keep all of your PMs, any messages that can be deleted from your in and/or out box would help to preserve and/or increase performance here on the forums.

Personally, I deleted over 300 pages of messages just a couple of days ago. Because I was deleting everything and didn't need to sort through what was there, it took less than an hour to get that done.

There is no way to delete everything in one or two master clicks. The most you can delete is one page of messages at a time. If you work quickly, you can delete about six pages per minute or roughly 350 pages in an hour. I wanted to provide these estimates for those who think the job may be too big to consider doing this. Keep in mind that this pace accounts for zero time spent deciding whether to keep or delete any messages - this pace was in a pure delete mode.

Once you've cleaned up your in and/or out boxes, finding a routine to get back and do this on a regular basis would be a great help as well.

So, I'm guessing I need to pare down the 8940 messages I have right now.

And just FYI, if you click on the "Prune Messages" link you can delete anything older than your choice of a number of days with one click.

8,940 messages    and here I thought I was clogging up the forum with well...it was less than your figure 

I wish I would have known this before I deleted page by page    But this is great to know going forward! Thanks Monica.

Sometimes my geekiness pays off.

It's actually a lot faster to get rid of PM's.

I did a test and I could delete 24 pages (=360 messages) in just ONE minute!!! (yeah - I've had a lot of practise!) 

Here's how:

1. At Inbox, click on the topmost little box that marks all 15 messages below to be deleted.
2. click <enter> and <enter>.
3. wait for 1-2 seconds (of course depends a lot on your interner connection).

So basically you keep your cursor on top of that little box and other hand on <enter>. Click, enter, enter. Click, enter, enter...
Fast and easy!!!

Now people go ahead and give it a go!!
