I always wanted to be a writer, journalist kind of. I love writing. But I never chose that way. Second is, I AM a photographer, but I can't do a living with it, I'm officially unemployed. So I tried webdesign to combine creativity and writing, did a lot of own webprojects (even once been the webmaster and fanclub for my fave drummer back then) just for the sake of it, cuz to be creative is what I wanna do, best in the music business like I did it before (without gettin paid...). I'm desperately trying, but I'm not good enough and don't get any trainee program (at least, for webdesign you need to learn something...). And so I try to move on, frustrated in any possible way you can think of. No idea what to do, to get a creative job in the music biz which in best case combines photography (concerts, documentary, not studio shots) and writing.

Have you thought of doing a photographic tribute book for a band you like. If you start with someone smallish who need the publicity and do a good job - you could perhaps work your way up to bigger bands and interviews. That way you could combine both writing and photography.

I already know some not so unknown guys. The drummer I worked with? You can see him on "Springsteen live in Berlin 1995". (He kicked me ass. I guess when I ever see him again, I'll slap him straight into the face.) Even know 2 from Dublin, friends of Ronnie Wood. But well - things have happened, times have changed, and most of them are tight as a snare drum. One of my pictures already got printed on a DVD and a CD cover, but oooops, they forgot to ask, pay and mention my name....which leaves me thinking: I'm good enough for free, not more. Since I run this as a business, noone has work for me anymore cuz now I'd like to get paid. :-[

There are so many talented people on this forum.  Good luck to you all!  I was a journalism student way back when,  and while it is now easier than ever to get your writing "out there"  through blogs etc., it's very difficult to get paid for it.  I would imagine it'e the same for musicians, you can put your songs on your facebook page or you tube, but you're not getting any money for them.

Now comes the "do as as I say, not would I would do" part.  I am too chicken for this, but if you're a musician, see if there are any open mic nights in your area.  Go for it!  You know Kelly Eddington, the amazingly talented Achtoon Baby artist?  She was a high school art teacher for many years, and recently took a break from that to focus on her own painting.  (I don't know her, but she writes a great blog and that's where I found this out.)  So it's never too late to follow your dream.

I wish you all the best!

I was also an English major with a creative writing concentration (my parents were pretty horrified when I switched from being a history major - my father in particular was not-so-secretly hoping that I would be like my cousin with a history BA, who went straight to law school after undergrad).  I had my work published in the college literary magazine, out of a pool of hundreds of submissions, but since then, I've managed to get the idea in my head that no "real" publication would want my work.

I've also had approximately 4 million people* tell me I'm wrong about that, but I can't kick myself in the pants enough to keep writing and especially, sending things out for publication. It was much easier to motivate myself to do those things when I was surrounded by other people interested in writing every single day I went to school or work (editorial jobs, university classes, working as a writing tutor, etc.)

*OK, slight exaggeration

MarsGirl, there's a literary magazine called The Sun (not the British tabloid) that publishes short memoirs, and they don't shy away from submissions about difficult life experiences. They are also officially always open to unsolicited submissions, which makes it really hard to get published, but it's also a sign that they actually read every essay sent their way. If I ever get brave enough to send my stuff out, I intend to try to get published there.

I also passed one of the teaching cert exams required by New York state, "just in case," but never took the rest, because I'm quite sure I don't want to handle a classroom full of kids. I ended up working in offices like everyone else.

I too have an English degree with a concentration in creative writing, uplate! Maybe we should motivate each other. Thanks for the tip on The Sun!

I like the thought. My editing pen would have come out for eight different things - seven mistakes and one word choice that created an awkward sentence.

Have fun finding them.  ;D

When I write for the hell of it, I tend not to be so anal about my grammatical errors, and it would help if I didn't write past 11pm when I'm wiped  :D

Sorry, thought you were looking for a critique kind of thing. I'll remove the editing glasses and go forward from here.

I like the concept of the piece. I would have liked to have seen it even more personalized as to what you were looking forward to in NYC. Describe the sounds, the smells, the sights and the feelings that you either remember and hope to enjoy again or the new ones that you are looking forward to experiencing for the first time (hey, another U2 reference). The more of you that you put into your writing, the more it will reach out to others and pull them into a place where they understand exactly what you are talking about because they are using you as the vehicle to see your world.

I didn't mean to harp on your grammatical corrections, thanks for pointing out that there were some  :)

I planned on writing a really big piece actually, up until I actually sat down to write it.  I came up with the idea that this is going to be my introductory entry into a series of entries about New York.  It will help me make the time before I go back to school go quicker, and I'll be able to get my feelings out there in a more organized way than if I would write them all in one huge piece (that I doubt many people would read all the way through).    It'll get very personal, trust me  :)

Thanks for the comments though.   :)

I've mentioned this in other threads, but if you write or would like to, you should read a book called How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead by Ariel Gore. It will give you a kick in the pants to start/resume/keep writing, as well as many ideas for where and how to publish your work.

i love the idea of this book, uplate!
*wonders if there's a music one somewhere...

all that time on the road during vacation gave me time to think...  got some immediate goals that might help keep me on track:
-start journaling every day (i need to get back to writing - helps with the lyrics & poetry...)
-use my resources (i have some musician contacts through my church.  while i'm not looking to start a christian band, the musicians there may be interested in helping me with a demo, right?  or maybe they know someone else... or maybe they need a  backup singer for one of their own projects and i could get my name out there locally...  )
-follow through on the using my resources point (i procrastinate, and shy away from 'bothering' people who could help me because 'what if they aren't interested?'
*internal voice:  ASK, JAB, QUIT BEING SUCH A  BIG CHICKEN!!!:D

it's a start...
good luck to the other 'dreamers' on the thread :)  gonna catch up on all your posts i missed while i was gone...
