I maintain that this is a brilliant idea from u2.com, but what's really irritating me is sitting here and listening to the samples - it's clear every single song has been mixed and mastered, and is ready for release (great quality btw; much better than the rose bowl in both sound and performance). So if the CD ends up filled with loads of songs we have already, not only will we have missed the opportunity to hear great quality live versions of rarities, but said rarities will actually exist out there somewhere, out of reach  :'(

Anyone considered a movement to organise a mass voting for rarities?

On the bright side, there's a decent future U2.com subscribers gift for when they run out of ideas right there in the remaining 24 songs. :P

Personally, I bet they've already decided what will be released (all the 'standards' and little else) and this is all for show. But then I do tend toward the tin foil hat end of the spectrum. And yes, I am that cynical when it comes to anything U2.com does.

I like the idea of a vote for rarities campaign, but the numbers would have to be incredibly overwhelming to change anything.

But whywould they do this, that's the question? We know that they have all these other songs mastered by now, so why go to the effort of rigging this thing when it's just as easy to put on 'Zooropa' as it is to put on 'Pride'?

If Zooropa and Ultra Violet aren't on it, though, it will be very suspect. There's both very clearly in the top 22.

Even if the voters vote for:

Streets
WOWY
NYD
BD
SBS
COBL
Vertigo
MW
Pride
Walk On
Bad
The Fly
EBTTRT
MOS
Magnificent
Boots
NLOTH
I'll Go Crazy Remix
UTEOTW
IWF
ISHFWILF
Stay

That still leaves room for... what rarities?

Because they don't want another duals fiasco. They want the responsibility to lay with the fans, while a vote and a seeming multitude of choices results in mass subscriptions as it shows. Could I be right here?

Seriously, there isn't any point in voting on the NLOTH songs, they're already in a high-quality Rose Bowl CD. I'd ather just get the rarities.

The Rose Bowl wasn't a CD; there's every point in voting for the NLOTH songs (Except Moment or Crazy, I guess) which haven't yet had an official live audio release if you don't like ripping the audio from the DVD.

Most people who want a DVD turned into a CD buy a $20 software that rips one into the other.

Because the same old stuff is a sure thing with the most people and they are wimps. They don't want to risk people possibly not renewing because they didn't get yet another version of Streets and One.

That thought did occur to me... but it sure would suck if we had to wait another year for the 'second half'!

Monicalea, i'm worried that it will have mainly the 'standards' as well, but i doubt it's been chosen already - as UC pointed out, with all songs mastered, it's no more difficult to put the songs the fans want on there, and it serves to actually make the fans happy. If it's easy to do and it keeps customers paying, this voting system is most likely genuine. However, from the polls, it's apparent that the fans themselves are voting for yet more versions of Streets, One etc, at the expense of never-before-played-live songs (like YBR) and never-even-released songs (Stingray). So we have only 'ourselves' to blame if the track listing ends up being mediocre... but in a way, that would be even more frustrating than if u2.com simply created one themselves.

They need whipping into shape, Moni, and you're the lady to do it. ;)

If this was a commercial wide release I would be certain it would be nothing but the hits. However, I don't think the same will happen here. I think most people who pay to subscribe are at the very least more hardcore than the casual U2 fan.

Do you think they would make that a paying position?

It's worth noting that the Go Crazy remix on thhis is the same one that they already released on Artificial Horizon. (And then on Wide Awake in Europe) So don't vote for Go Crazy if you have AH!

Or Moment of Surrender, since that is also on WAIE, which can be also downloaded.
