Now when all this steel and these stories
They drift away to rust
And all our youth and beauty
Has been given to the dust
When your game has been decided
And you're burning down the clock
And all our little victories and glories
Have turned into parking lots
When your best hope and desires
Are scattered to the wind
And hard times come
And hard times go
And hard times come
And hard times go
And hard times come
And hard times go
And hard times come
And hard times go
Yeah, just to come again
Bring on your Wrecking Ball

If Bono wrote that, people would be bitching: "he's not the lyricist he used to be."  Or words to that effect.

If Bono wrote 'Stay' today, people would be bitching that he isn't the lyricist he used to be. I'm used to it. ;)

You're right, Cedars of Lebanon dispels all that.

Yes, Cedars has very good lyrics. So does Moment of Surrender. And the worst of the lyrics on NLOTH aren't dramatically worse than, say, Trip Through Your Wires. To coin a phrase, haters gonna hate. :P

"Early one morning, the sun was shining
I was lying in bed
Wondering if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks, they said our life together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's home-made dress
Papa's bank-book wasn't big enough
And I stood there by the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows I've paid my dues
Getting through
Tangled up in blue."

Maybe TUC is Bob Dylan?

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick but when they will I can only guess
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
I can't help it if I'm lucky.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts
Even you yesterday you had to ask me where it was at
I couldn't believe after all these years you didn't know me any better than that
Sweet lady.

Idiot wind blowing every time your move your mouth
Blowing down the backroads heading south
Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I ran into the fortune-teller who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like
There's a lone soldier on the cross smoke pouring out of a boxcar door
You didn't know it you didn't think it could be done in the final end he won the wars
After losing every battle.

I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes
Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb
Blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What's good is bad what's bad is good you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom.

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed your eyes don't look into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone faced while the building burned
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees while the springtime turned
Sloooooooowly into autumn.

Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol
Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth
You're an idiot babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody else instead
Down the highway down the tracks down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars hounded by your memory
And all you raging glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me
You'll never know the hurt I suffered not the pain I raise above
And I'll never know the same about you your holiness or your kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind blowing through the dust upon our shelves
We're idiots babe
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

Bring on your Wrecking Ball

If Bono wrote that, people would be bitching: "he's not the lyricist he used to be."  Or words to that effect.

The lyrics are actually pretty clever. The song Wrecking Ball was written for when Bruce closed down Giants stadium a few years ago. They built a new stadium right next to it and Giants stadium (where footballs NY Giants & NY Jets) played has been turned into a parking lot. The song can be seen as an ode to New Jersey and Giants Stadium or as a song about overcoming the hard times in life.

"Come on and take your best shot, let me see what you've got
 Bring on your wrecking ball!"

I think the lyrics on the new Bruce album are really good, especially Death to my Hometown and Jack of all Trades. I posted the lyrics to Death to my Hometown before but i'll do so here.

Oh, no cannonballs did fly, no rifles cut us down
No bombs fell from the sky, no blood soaked the ground
No powder flash blinded the eye, no deathly thunder sound
But just as sure as the hand of God, they brought death to my hometown
They brought death to my hometown, boys

No shells ripped the evening sky, no cities burning down
No armies stormed the shores for which we'd die
 No dictators were crowned
I awoke from a quiet night, I never heard a sound
Marauders raided in the dark and brought death to my hometown, boys
 Death to my hometown

They destroyed our families' factories and they took our homes
They left our bodies on the plains, the vultures picked our bones

So listen up, my sonny boy, be ready for when they come
For they'll be returning sure as the rising sun
Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it 'til you're done
Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well
Send the robber barons straight to hell
The greedy thieves who came around
And ate the flesh of everything they found
Whose crimes have gone unpunished now
Who walk the streets as free men now

Ah, they brought death to our hometown, boys
 Death to our hometown, boys
 Death to our hometown, boys
 Death to our hometown, whoa!

Upload: the evolution principal
U c a rock on the shore and say
"it's always been there"
Download: no responsibility
Do what you want nobody cares
Upload: the master race idea
Genetically disposed 2 rule the world
Download: a future full of isolated
Full of isolated boys and girls

Upload: a 2-party system
The lesser of 2 dangers
Illusion of choice
Download: a veiled form of fascism
Nothing really ever changes
U never had a voice

If you look, ur sure gonna find
Thruout mankind's history
A colonized mind
The one in power makes law
Under which the colonized fall
But without god it's just the blind leading the blind

Upload: a joint venture record deal
It's just another way 4 the man 2 steal
While he's sticking you with the bill
Download: the temporary acquisition of fleeting fame and fortune
Nothing 2 leave in ur will

Upload: a child with no father
Download: no respect 4 authority
Upload: a child with no mother
Download: a hard time showing love

If you look, ur sure gonna find
Thruout mankind's history
A colonized mind

Under which the colonized fall
But without god
It's just the blind leading the blind

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man: no time to talk
Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around
since I was born.

"Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down this track
Well, you don't know where you're goin' now
But you know you won't be back
Well darling, if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
Yeah, And we'll leave the rest

Well, big wheels roll through fields where sunlight streams
Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams

Well, I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion now
For this part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past

Big wheels roll through fields where sunlight streams
Meet me in the Land of Hope And Dreams"

I heard a review of the new album on NPR today.  This song especially got a shout out.  Sounded good!  8)

A friend of mine was this Japanese. He had a girlfriend in
Paris. He tried to date her in six months and eventually she
said yes. You know he took her to his apartment, cut off her
head. Put the rest of her body in the refrigerator, ate her
piece by piece. Put her in the refrigerator, put her in the
freezer. And when he ate her and took her bones to the Bois de
Boulogne, by chance a taxi driver noticed him burying the
bones. You don't believe me? Truth is stranger than fiction.
We drive through there every day.

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
gonna stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
