The body bags and little rags of children torn in two
And the jellied brains of those who remain to put the finger right on you.
As the madmen play on words and make us all dance to their song,
To the tune of starving millions to make a better kind of gun.

The killer's breed or the demon's seed,
The glamour, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain,
But don't you pray for my soul anymore.

Part of Zero-Sum by NIN:

They're starting to open up the sky
They're starting to reach down through
And it feels like we're living in that split-second
    Of a car crash
    And time is slowing down
And if we only had a little more time
    And this time
    Is all there is
Do you remember the time we
    And all the times we
    And should have
    And were going to
    I know
    And I know you remember
How we could justify it all
    And we knew better
In our hearts we knew better
And we told ourselves it didn't matter
    And we chose to continue
And none of that matters anymore
In the hour of our twilight
And soon it will be all said and done
And we will all be back together as one
If we will continue at all

Thanks to others for posting. Too many to choose from, even if we restricted it to favorite tunes from our home countries. I'll be seeking out the tunes on YouTube to hear them for myself. Two favorites though:

"On The Turning Away" by Pink Floyd from the album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

“Sinking Like a Sunset” by Tom Cochrane from the Album Mad Mad World

She's thinking about the prince and Cinderella
The outlaws the hustlers and the heroes
They never seem to fall
It doesn't matter it doesn't matter what
The outcome of the story is
Because in real life I try to tell her
It's not like that at all
Oh won't you please just hold out now
Cause there are some things I'd like you to forget
When you world is...Sinking like a sunset

Tales of Don Juan they're very poetic babe
But out on the streets out there
The true verse of life is written
You know it's really a shame
When you've got to let go
Of all the things you love
Like a fighter he really bleeds
When he must hang up his gloves

No I am not a rock
And I can feel it now
But for a moment
I'd like to forget
That my heart is
Sinking like a sunset
Sinking like a sunset

Everybody has a story
Some are tragic some find glory
But it feels more real when you're here
Right next to me

You can walk too far out on that ledge
And you might lose your mind
You know I need you now
You're an angel that keeps me in line
The old sergeant has broken down
He's grown senile
He shouts "kill the bastards!" in the night
Cause he's all out of time

Don't hold out let's make love right now
Cause there's some things I'd like to forget
When our hearts are sinkin' like a sunset
Won't you hold me now
And make things right
'Cause when you're with me here
The sun comes out at night
Making me forget
We're sinking like a sunset

Sinking like a sunset
Sinking like a sunset

Going to California - Zeppelin

I absolutely love this song and the lyrics are even better.

Spent my days with a woman unkind, Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start, Going To California with an aching in my heart.
Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
Took my chances on a big jet plane, never let them tell you that they're all the same.
The sea was red and the sky was grey, wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today.
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
as the children of the sun began to awake.

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow;
I think I might be sinking.
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high.

To find a queen without a king,
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings... la la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.

Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman

Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind

I don't want no one to squeeze me, they might take away my life
I don't want no one to squeeze me, they might take away my life
I just want someone to hold me and rock me through the night

Here's another lyric dump. I wrote it all out, got timed out of the forum, and had to write it again. I'm doing this all for nonexistent readers. :P

"On a night like this I deserve to get kissed, at least once or twice."

"Don't give me love thy neighbor. Don't give me charity. Don't give me peace and love and the lord above, you only get in my way with your stupid ideas! I am an island, entire of myself. And when I get older, older than today, I'll never need anybody's help in any way."

"The girl in the cake jumped out too soon by mistake. Somebody said the whole thing's half-baked, and Diamond lifts her glass and says 'Cheers.'"

"And when we come for you, we'll be dressed up all in blue, with the ocean in our arms. Kiss your eyes and kiss your palms."

"Would you leave me if I told you what I'd done? And would you leave me if I told you what I'd become? 'Cause it's so easy to sing it to a crowd, but it's so hard, my love, to say it to you out loud."

"And the grass was so green against my new clothes, and I did cartwheels in your honor. Dancing on tiptoes, my own secret ceremonials before the service began. Doing handstands in the graveyard."

"In some way, I'm there with you, up against the wall on a Wednesday afternoon."

"The land here is strong, strong beneath my feet. It feeds on the blood. It feeds on the heat. The rhythm is below me, the rhythm of the heat. The rhythm is around me. The rhythm has control. The rhythm is inside me. THE RHYTHM HAS MY SOUL."

"I am standing up at the water's edge in my dream. I cannot make a single sound as you scream."

"I took the old track, the hollow shoulder, across the water. On the tall cliffs, they were getting older, sons and daughters. This jaded underworld was riding high. Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky. And as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain was warm and soaked the crowd."

"Driving 'round the city ring, staring at the shape of things. I talk in pictures, not in words. Overloaded with everything we said. Be careful where you tread. Watch the wire!"

"I can remember standing by the wall, and the guns shot above our heads, and we kissed as though nothing could fall."

"I must be one in a million. I won't let the day pass without her. It's too late to be grateful. It's too late to be late again. It's too late to be hateful. The European cannon is here."

"Kill your prayers for love and peace, you'll wake the Thought Police."

"Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way. The time is gone, the song is over. Thought I'd something more to say."

"How can you shine if you've never seen the sun? How does a child become a man without a child? How can you heal someone who doesn't wanna heal, doesn't wanna heal, doesn't wanna heal?"

thought I oughtta bare my naked feelings
thought I oughtta tear the curtain down
I held the blade in trembling hands
prepared to make it, but -
just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut

Life is short, it's the longest thing you'll ever do
The worse, the curse was your dreams came true
God is a mirror in which each man sees himself
Hell is a place where you don't need any help
When I first met you, your face was like snow
Wherever I went to, you wanted to go
Your face, your place, your can of mace in a case
As you put her down, 8:17 on the ground, your faith in a clown
You put your faith in a clown
Don't leave me now

-Bono's rap in Moment of Surrender

It's something like that anyways.

Sisters of the way-side bide their time in quiet peace,
Await their place within the ring of calm;
Still stand to turn in seconds of release,
Await the call they know may never come.
In times of lightness, no intruder dared upon
To jeopardize the course, upset the run;
And all was joy and hands were raised toward the sun
As love in the halls of plenty overrun.

Still in their bliss unchallenged mighty feast,
Unending dances shadowed on the day.
Within their walls, their daunting formless keep,
Preserved their joy and kept their doubts at bay.
Faceless legions stood in readiness to weep,
Just turn a coin, bring order to the fray;
And everything is soon no sooner thought than deed,
But no one seemed to question in anyway.

How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land
To seek the unsuspecting and the weak;
And powerless the fabled sat, too smug to lift a hand
Toward the foe that threatened from the deep.
Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand
Adrift upon a sea of futile speech?
And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan'
Where was your word, where did you go?
Where was your helping, where was your bow? Bow.
Dull is the armour, cold is the day.
Hard was the journey, dark was the way. Way.
I heard the word; I couldn't stay. Oh.
I couldn't stand it another day, another day,
Another day, another day.

Touched by the timely coming,
Roused from the keeper's sleep,
Release the grip, throw down the key.

Held now within the knowing,
Rest now within the peace.
Take of the fruit, but guard the seed.

They had to stay!

Held now within the knowing,
Rest now within the beat.
Take of the fruit, but guard the seed...

Paranoia, paranoia everybody's coming to get me, just say you never met me.

Love Flagpole Sitta, but my favourite line is:

Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding.

Emily - Joanna Newsom

The meadowlark and the chim-choo-ree and the sparrow
Set to the sky in a flying spree, for the sport over the pharaoh
A little while later the Pharisees dragged comb through the meadow
Do you remember what they called up to you and me, in our window?

There is a rusty light on the pines tonight
Sun pouring wine, lord, or marrow
Down into the bones of the birches
And the spires of the churches
Jutting out from the shadows
The yoke, and the axe, and the old smokestacks and the bale and the barrow
And everything sloped like it was dragged from a rope
In the mouth of the south below

We've seen those mountains kneeling, felten and grey
We thought our very hearts would up and melt away
From that snow in the nighttime
Just going
And going
And the stirring of wind chimes
In the morning
In the morning
Helps me find my way back in
From the place where I have been

And, Emily - I saw you last night by the river
I dreamed you were skipping little stones across the surface of the water
Frowning at the angle where they were lost, and slipped under forever
In a mud-cloud, mica-spangled, like the sky'd been breathing on a mirror

Anyhow - I sat by your side, by the water
You taught me the names of the stars overhead that I wrote down in my ledger
Thoough all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades loosed in December
I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember

That the meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee

You came and lay a cold compress upon the mess I'm in
Threw the window wide and cried, "Amen! Amen! Amen!"
The whole world stopped to hear you hollering
You looked down and saw now what was happening

The lines are fading in my kingdom
(Though I have never known the way to border them in)
So the muddy mouths of baboons and sows and the grouse and the horse and the hen
Grope at the gate of the looming lake that was once a tidy pen
And the mail is late and the great estates are not lit from within
The talk in town's becoming downright sickening

In due time we will see the far butte lit by a flare
I've seen your bravery, and I will follow you there
And row through the nighttime
Gone healthy
Gone healthy all of a sudden
In search of the midwife
Who could help me
Who could help me
Help me find my way back in
There are worries where I've been

Say, say, say in the lee of the bay; don't be bothered
Leave your troubles here where the tugboats shear the water from the water
(Flanked by furrows, curling back, like a match held up to a newspaper)
Emily, they'll follow your lead by the letter
And I make this claim, and I'm not ashamed to say I know you better
What they've seen is just a beam of your sun that banishes winter

Let us go! Though we know it's a hopeless endeavor
The ties that bind, they are barbed and spined and hold us close forever
Though there is nothing would help me come to grips with a sky that is gaping and yawning
There is a song I woke with on my lips as you sailed your great ship towards the morning

Come on home, the poppies are all grown knee-deep by now
Blossoms all have fallen, and the pollen ruins the plow
Peonies nod in the breeze and while they wetly bow
With hydrocephalitic listlessness ants mop up-a their brow

And everything with wings is restless, aimless, drunk and dour
The butterflies and birds collide at hot, ungodly hours
And my clay-colored motherlessness rangily reclines
Come on home, now! All my bones are dolorous with vines

Pa pointed out to me, for the hundredth time tonight
The way the ladle leads to a dirt-red bullet of light
Squint skyward and listen
Loving him, we move within his borders
Just asterisms in the stars' set order

We could stand for a century
Staring
With our heads cocked
In the broad daylight at this thing
Joy
Landlocked
In bodies that don't keep
Dumbstruck with the sweetness of being
Until we don't be told
Take this
Eat this

Told
The meteorite is the source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee

"Someday these dreams will pull you through my door, and I'll come running to tie your shoe." (repeat last line over and over)

Sounds stupid, but it's adorable.
