July 4th is Independence Day. I would wager my bottom dollar bona and the boys were aligning themselves to the lucrative american market by naming this atmospheric number after that landmark date.

Bit of a filler on the album though...

There are no lyrics in 4th of July.  It is an instrumental. 

Seems like I read it was called 4th of July in honor of Edge's daughter who was born that day.

I'm surprised that no one has pointed this out, but I think it's a song about God.

In addition to that, Edge and Adam were playing around in the studio and Eno recorded it without them knowing. It was July 4, 1984. And, that same day, Hollie Evans was born.
