U2 > General U2 Discussion
Get on Your Boots may have ruined U2
Tumbling Dice:
360 was a commercial and critical success, and it was an all stadium tour. Worrying.
TheSceneoftheAccident:
Sugarcube does have a valid point, despite being wrong in the sense that they claim 360 wasn't a hit. I think they mean it wasn't a hit in that the band simply stopped using it to represent the No Line material and instead decided to play the hits and bring back the old fan favourites. I think that kind of proves that the band are not satisfied with their current commercial performance as far as sales and hit singles go. And as I said in the OP and title of this thread, I feel Get on Your Boots is to blame.

Frothy rage? How very dare you.
Here we go again - why is everyone obsessed with size and $$$$$$ here. As I keep saying until I'm frothing at the gills, success should be measured in terms of art, not in terms of sales. There are plenty of bands that make fortunes who really aren't very good. If you're one on these hugely unintelligent Radiohead haters you will understand this. Equally there are bands who will never make it big but make excellent records. Then again there's Oasis who are truly shite.
So, yes they made lots of money. Yes, lots of people drinking warm lager and eating crap food waited for them to play Streets before they wet themselves. No, it wasn't a pleasing artistic statement. Therefore it wasn't a hit. It just made lots of money.
Yes, we all get you're obsessed with size. Change the channel - this show is getting old.

Uhhh....no it played to millions of people as well. But dont let that stat get in the way of your attempt to reclassify success as merely artistic. There is artistic, financial and popular success. I would argue 360 was all of the above. Certainly artistic for a stadium show played to the masses.
Boots was a very poor choice of single for this album, but it came off very well live. Not a great song on that album but a good live tune.

A financial success is a matter of maths. Therefore it was clearly a financial success. Everything U2 have done has been a financial success as they're obsessed with money.
An artistic success is a matter of opinion. In my opinion NLOTH was an artistic failure. You feel differently which is fair enough.
As far as popularity is concerned, being popular is totally abstract in terms of success.
