Larry Mullen Jnr = Mr Perfect?
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:41:01 AM »
Dear U2 fans,

I have a question which I have thought about for a long time.

Is Larry Mullen Jnr Mr Perfect?

So, why this question you ask? Well, here are my thoughts. If you go through all officially released U2 material you will find that every member of U2 have screwed up in a live situation except, you guessed, Larry Mullen Jnr.

We have "Guitar Hero" The Edges bum note on Party Girl on Under a Blood Red Sky.
We have Adams false start on Angel of Harlem from U2 Go Home
And don't get me started on Bono...

But I cant find a single officially released c***-up by Larry, so my question is is Larry Mr Perfect or simply so vain that they edit out his mistakes?

Help me here...

Yep UV.

Plus his drum kit on, I think it was TUC, had a malfunction with his hi-hat and Eno left it on. Not a Larry mistake but one from his kit.

I have a DVD bootleg from the Vertigo tour where Larry drops his stick and calls out his tech to pick it up for him.

Well it's not like he's playing anything terribly complicated

He drops a drumstick during the intro of The Unforgettable Fire and you can hear him say the S word

I always heard that he came in too soon and that's why he swore. It's very quiet, you have to listen for it, but it makes me smile every time I hear it.

In Angel of Harlem at the concert in Slane castle in 2001 he was "navigated" twice by Bono :D. You may call it mistakes ;D
But those were very funny moments  :D

Hello again,

Thanks for pointing out the mistakes that Larry did. I actually noticed the false start of Unforgettable Fire before, but never realized it was a mistake.

So, let me narrow down my question. Are there any mistakes in the official live recordings? Someone pointed out the directions given in Angel of Harlem, but they are given to Adam, aren't they?

Anyway, I think it is really cool that U2 actually do not edit out mistakes (or at least not all of them).

U2 360 Tour, First American Leg, Toronto Night 1.

He F'd up during the intro to streets, the drumstick lead in was on tempo for half the intro.  Then he paused and when he started again he was like half a beat behind everybody.  The Edge saved the day by turning around and altering just a little bit the ending of the intro and boom everybody was back on track.  It is easily heard in the bootleg recording.  Also I was there so I can confirm.

Then later in the tour the traditional drumstick lead in was dropped.

Them mega-rockstars  :o heh.

In the Chicago DVD for City of Blinding Lights, does Larry come in early on the cymbals, or is Adam late on the keyboards? He rolls on the cymbals twice
