Which is very odd because Pop was seemingly some of their best playing to date.

I suppose when you look at how contrasting both albums were though, it kinda makes sense for everything to be upside down in terms of performance. Larry and Adam were very strong on Pop but less so on ATYCLB. And vice versa for Bono and Edge, although I'd say Edge played very well on Pop, and better than ATYCLB.

That is true. And I agree that ATYCLB doesn't have Bono's greatest lyrics too.
