In terms of sales, of course NLOTH sold less than the older albums. That has less to do with the quality/relevance of U2 and more to do with today's musical climate. Album sales will never be as high as they used to be because so many people download only select songs and don't buy full albums. And the 5+ million NLOTH sales are nothing to sneeze at.

This is why I look at Adele's 21 as incredible for selling over 20 million albums in today's musical climate.

Nothing sort of amazing.

And so overplayed and overrated!

Well, when I first heard 21 I thought it was a very solid CD overall (not just full of "singles" like many other CDs). I think Adele deserves the success; however, the overplay/overexposure of her music has kind of lessened my enjoyment of it--I'm pretty much sick of her songs. She's a good artist, though.

I agree, though, the fact that she sold over 20 million albums is incredible. But when you hit it out of the ballpark in terms of airplay and critical/public reception, that usually happens. :)

U2 is the only band whose whole albums I still buy without hesitation.
In fact, the last CD I bought was NLOTH 3 years ago.

I really just wish U2 would evolve with the music world.  They're stuck on the idea of making album sales and equate that to hit songs.  I want U2 to continue in the NLOTH direction.  The albums biggest problem is incoherence.  The same goes for Pop.  U2 really should just put out what they record first and leave it to a producer and engineer to finish.  No second guessing... especially if Danger Mouse is your producer.

Thinking of his production, I actually don't think El Camino is that great.  I'm more impressed with the Norah Jones effort, and I especially love the album Rome, which was put together with himself, Daniel Luppi, Norah Jones, and Jack White.  It is a fantastic album, perhaps my favorite of 2011 (although I only recently discovered it).

He is an awesome producer.
