U2 holograms
« on: April 28, 2012, 10:34:34 PM »
By now, you must have heard about the appearance of Tupac (a deceased rapper) at Coachella. He walked around, performed, and actually looked pretty lifelike. So, it got me thinking: What if U2 used this technology during their shows? MacPhisto? Pavoratti? Johnny Cash? What would you guys think if they did something like that?

pretty soon this kinda stuff will be more common. it reminds me of a scene towards the end of minority report involving a fat man and a hologram of a woman

I'm not interested in reliving past glories like Macphisto or anything else.

Now if we're talking some kind of holographic projections of the band performing at a show in their current form that's different.

But this past people back from history is a gimmick.
And I'm talking real holograms for U2 not Tupac, which was just footage created by a special effects house and projected onto a thin screen.

A real hologram is one projected into empty 3D space.

The Tupac one is the height of gimmick no different than bringing back Orville Redenbacher for a popcorn commericial or Fred Astaire dancing in a commercial hawking vacuum cleaners(the first of which was done by the same fx house, Digital Domain, that did the Redenbacher commercial and Tupac).

I say no to the holograms its not really needed. If these guys just got out on stage got rid of the big screens and all the hype and just played a 3 hour set in arenas it would be incredible. My favorite U2 concert was on the UF tour, they just played and played and broug the house down, so big screens, no Bono incessantly preaching, just 4 guys playing great music and 20 thousand fans having the time of their life. Play the hits but drag out some od time tunes that never get played.

Consider me jealous.  UF is probably the single tour I most wish I'd seen (that I didn't see).

Its the tour that made me a fan for life (even in the U2 bad times). I have never seen a band top U2 live even back on the Unforgettable fire tour.

Haha! U2 as holograms is quite fun to think about.

I'm picturing them opening for themselves a la the Daltons (but someone else, of course). Not every show, maybe not even more than once; it would be funny to see what they came up with to be projected onstage as their opening "act".

OR -- Imagine what kind of promotional tour they could do with holograms!  :D

My wish would be that U2 just tour and have fun with the music (less tech and less stage), but I also love the U2 that loves to create spectacle. (Totally thinking Popmart here!)

I think it would also be a cool idea if they put out inspirational figures as holograms. Dr. King during Pride is the first thing that comes to mind.
