What do we REALLY want from U2.
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:16:08 AM »
Hi All,

I just want to get a temperature reading for what we really expect and want from U2. I have been very vocal in my disappointment lately from my all time favorite band. But really I question myself as what would make me happy with U2. If they went back to the JT sound, the AB sound? I know I have not been surprised but a U2 album since POP, although I might add NLOTH was close. I actually really like NLOTH but I have not listened to HTDAAB or ATYCLB in years.

Will a total different sound from them make me happy? Will I be willing to actually listen with an open mind and not be ready to pick them apart. I don't know it may be too late for me with them. I know I cannot listen to Bono go on and on anymore, it may sound selfish but I have problems and causes I support on my own. I guess time will tell.

make an album that the live performances on the next tour are completely built around - an album that they'll perform all of each night, whether in its entirety end-to-end or alternating it song by song with older material. If that means an album only 35-40 minutes long, so be it.

I'm not really asking for much.  I want them to go back to the drawing board and make a daring and experimental album, and then to go on tour playing a lot of their new album in arenas.

Yeah. The genre doesn't matter as long as the songs are good!

Well, I'm not greedy  ;)

But................

The unreleased album they left Fez with (Brian and Danny have hinted that is was better than NLOTH).
The Dangermouse album (c'mon just put it out).
POP rerecorded and stripped back (would really like to hear this album with flood producing it alone)

As I said, not much............

Bono Vox should

a) take off those daft glasses
b) stop having an opinion on everything

Edge is alright as he is - but he always has been

Adam and Larry should wear tighter trousers

I want a good album without Lillywhite, Eno or Lanois (no offense guys) and then a digital release, fan club or something of Songs of Ascent.

For the album, I want there to be b-sides or extra tracks, even though b-sides are kind of a thing of the past. Since U2 under McG still believes in physical media (Cd's), they can put out the singles on CD with a b-side like they did with Pop/ATYCLB/HTDAAB.

As for their appearance, everyone looks great as is, but I want Bono to grow his hair to ZooEuropa/Elevation Tour length (not short, not long). He needs to ditch the 2009 "fade" which doesn't suit him too well. Ditching the glasses would be cool and please, no more guyliner.

Finally, I want an arena tour with reasonable ticket prices.

A last hurrah of uncompromising focus on original unheard pieces of music with no throwaway set of words on any. No rehashes, not by-the-numbers stuff to please anyone, just fresh music, if possible pushing boundaries and always aiming for a profound emotional effect on the listener. If there is irony let it come from the truth of the matter, not the wit of the lyricist.

And if possible work with someone new to them (Dangermouse might be a winner still, who knows, but the band).

I agree, especially foregoing Sillywhite and Leno. They've been great but it's time to move on.

So release a great album and tour arenas with a minimal production and lower prices.

And also a super-uber mega supreme kitchen sink box set 5 years after they've broken up.

New material. Period. A decent running order on the album would be nice to. I don't think the running order on NLOTH was bad, but it wasn't great either.

The unreleased album they left Fez with (Brian and Danny have hinted that is was better than NLOTH).
The Dangermouse album (c'mon just put it out).
The remaining finished songs from the Rick Rubin sessions

All of this would sell quite well amongst the fanbase when pressed on CD. The problem is, their record label does not want them to cater to their fanbase but to all other people who are not fans, to people who could not care less. That business model might have sold compilation albums in supermarkets 10 years ago but not these days anymore.

But who am I to tell them who they should consider as their core audience? I only have all their albums from TJT to NLOTH, a few singles and no compilations. No videos/DVDs and haven't seen them in concert. They must trust their own instincts.

I guess of the above, all we will get is the "Dangermouse album" but there might be a RedOne track or 2 on it. And the rest of the fine material goes to the vault because the business model is based on keeping the variety of the content artificially scarce. However, more different things would sell more today than just a small variety of stuff.

Oh, and the most important thing is: great lyrics and great melodies - for the whole song, not just a few lines in a song.

All I want is new music that I'll like. And a corresponding tour so I can see them live again. That's really all.
