The Blu-Ray thread
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:58:28 PM »
Anyone here have a Blu-Ray player (even if it's your PS3)? I got a Sony player for Christmas and I love Blu-Ray! So here's a thread dedicated to the format. You can use it to post about your player(s), your collection, movies that are coming out on Blu-Ray (like Jaws and E.T. 8)) or anything Blu related.

Cool story bro. ;) I love the pop up menus.

I think the real question for this forum is what U2 Blu-Rays do you guys have? I have It Might Get Loud, the Rose Bowl show and From the Sky Down. Rattle and Hum is actually also on Blu-Ray (it was an early title, it's actually on HD DVD too!) but it looks like crap so I'm hanging on to my DVD. Plus the Blu Ray is out of print and it's not worth spending $20 on a used copy.

I'll trade you the DVD for the Blu Ray. ;)

I hear the Live in Dublin video actually looks better on DVD than Blu Ray

I think Blu-Ray is best used for movies that feature intense color and/or plenty of action (explosions, fast camera movement like car chases, etc.). While there's improvement in most conversions to Blu-Ray, I think you get the most bang for your money in those scenarios. The other place I've found it to be worth the value is buying television shows. Dr. Who, Torchwood and Downton Abbey all look fantastic on this medium.

Don't you need a higher resolution screen to enjoy the benefits of BR? I've looked at some in-store presentations, and some of them looked pretty bad, like pixel graphics. Is that due to a mismatch of display/original recorded picture resolution and playback medium?

Taking into consideration that BR discs are way overpriced at the moment, I'm not sure I want to switch over from DVDs at all. I'm okay with DVD picture and sound quality.

It seems like all stores screw up their displays. Blu rays in stores never look good for some reason.

Yes, you want to go with a 720p or greater resolution screen to enjoy what BR brings to the table.

Places like WalMart have BR discs for $10 or cheaper, so you can start to build a collection for not too much money. I do agree though that if you don't sit down and watch BR material, you likely won't miss it. When you see the difference though, that's when you're in trouble.

You don't mean good electronics stores as they look very good there. It's the more generic stores that don't do their displays properly.

Blu-ray is awesome and it doesn't only improve the picture quality over DVD, but most blu-ray discs also offer lossless audio formats which is a big plus for me. I can't go back to DVD's now. Though, most blu-ray players will do an "upscaling" out of your DVD's and they still look pretty amazing after this process.

I have Rattle & Hum and I think that the biggest plus on owning this on blu-ray is for the awesome lossless soundtrack, it really shines.

Thanks, however I'm in the EU, and a BR movie costs around $30 here. I haven't checked Tesco or other megastores, but I don't really want to anyway.

On the other hand, BR players themselves are dirt-cheap these days, so there's not much risk involved, and better sound quality (also playback envir. dependent) could be worth keeping one around just in case.

Not much of an upgrade for older reissued films on Blu Ray but it's crystal clear pictures and sound for new films.

Apparently, watching regular DVDs on a Blu Ray improves the quality of the DVD playback, but I can't say I've noticed.

Basically, I buy all new films in Blu Ray, but I'm not going to upgrade my existing DVD collection.
