"A timetable is hardly etched in stone, however. "It'll be whenever we get together," Mercer says. "Right now Brian's doing U2; I think he's still in Dublin doing that. He's so sought after and so busy" "

More confirmation (as if we needed it at this point...)

It's funny, i suspect they haven't made enough progress to release an album this year (especially considering Bono's latest comments about not being sure if they'll even use the danger mouse material), and yet they seem to be working quite consistently with him. They've been with him since summer 2010, and the next album, let's face it, probably won't come out until autumn 2013... do they normally work on material for 3 years?

Even if we put aside the mid-tour work, and look at post-360 work with danger mouse (and assume the next album is out at the end of 2013), if they keep with him that will be almost a full 2 years of studio work... is that usual?

You have to factor in all the research Bono is doing watching the Disney Channel to determine what the kids are into these days.

I don't think I've ever heard a bass line that is unbelievable. Sounds like hyperbole to me. :P

He hasn't been on fire on the guitar since Achtung, let's be honest. It's time for some out of this world solos. When was the last time we had something akin to the fly, even better than the real thing, until the end of the world or all i want is you. He's become much more restrained solo wise since this period and I hope he finds it again.

That's not to say his solos aren't good anymore, magnificent, unknown caller, MOS are great but the AB stuff is outrageously good.
I actually suspect that he has been "on fire" a lot during the last ten years or so in the studio and that the band did indeed demo some "punk rock made on venus"...I just bet that none of it made it onto the last 3 albums.

Certainly not an expert on anything "U2", but I suspect the "punk rock made on Venus" comment was in reference to the opening sequence of Native Son.    I personally thought that was extraordinary.
Yeah, it was pretty cool now that you mention it.

I heard it was more a combo of focus groups and songs covered by glee

http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Bono-on-SpidermanThe-Queen-Mitt-Romney-U2-Ireland-the-undocumented-and-more---158849255.html?page=2

U2 is hardly through with making more of their own moments.  Bono talks excitedly about recent studio work and a fruitful collaboration with Brian Burton, better known as Danger Mouse, half of the former duo Gnarls Barkley with Cee-Lo Green.

“You know, there might be life in the old dog yet!” Bono says.

“We’ve hit a vein. We’re working with this special soul, Brian Burton. He listens in a very different way.”The sound, Bono says, is hardly old school U2.

“There are things that have always been in our music but maybe not being accentuated. It’s really very, very different. It’s shocking how different it is.”Edge, Bono says, is on fire. “He’s unbelievable when he works.  I feel very sorry for his family,” Bono laughs. Larry and Adam are also pumped.

“There’s a bass line coming up that you literally cannot believe. It’s just unbelievable. So yeah, it’s exciting.”But Bono isn’t putting a timeline on when the music will be finished, or even if it will see the light of day.  If the band isn’t completely thrilled with the end result it will go nowhere.

“We can still spoil it, and you know, I could be wrong,” Bono says. “And if so then people will not hear from us because there would be no reason for us to be around.

“There’s no sense of entitlement with these men. They are absolutely, you know, as honest right now as they were when making our first album, Boy.

“They don’t expect there to be an audience for us every time we go and put an album out. We have to dig down very deep.”

Start filling out your cards, people.  I counted at least five spaces covered.

:-D
Thanks Lorijane, Bono Hyperbole Bingo made my day!

Hmmm, this is interesting news. Am I the only one here who thinks a U2 pop album is the last thing I want in the world. Of course I wouldn't have a problem with an album like Pop, but you know what I mean. Don't make a silly album aimed towards radio songs, it is doomed to fail. I don't think too many people have mentioned or said this but why isn't U2 working with Eno and Lanois? Was it because NLOTH didn't do as well as their other albums? Their best albums have arguably been with them (TUF, JT, AB, ATYCLB, NLOTH). Working with them and not Danger Mouse would lead to much better results IMO, even if they are trying to reinvent themselves or stay relevant (which are both foolish notions for them to worry about, especially the part about relevancy).

I would have to agree with that. I really don't want them falling into the generic music that on the radio today. I love their innovation and the difference that they have in their songs, not to mention some of them actually have meaning. If this is really to be U2's last album ( :( ) I want them to go out with something true to themselves and something that will be good for fans, they have enough that radio relevance isn't a huge deal. It will be soooo much better if they make a U2 album rather than a radio pop album.

If The Edge was truly on fire as Bono claims before every album, we would have gotten more prominent and pouncing guitar sounds. Or their studio would have long burned down.

Either way, the outcome is clear. The Edge will stick to his guns - delay-ridden guitar effects with his Herdim pick played backwards, with the mindset that chords needs to be economical and that notes are expensive.

Hardly on fire, if you ask me.

Cheers,

J

I'm still waiting for Edge to literally be lit on fire during a concert...

It would be cool if they had some sort of fireproof beanie he could wear with a torch at the top.

Or he could act like the guys in Rammstein; the singer actually sets himself on fire during the performance of a specific song. Great show.

Hmm, just to go on about Bono quotes. There was one that was particularly funny from back in the day. Maybe POP era. It might have been about If god Would Send his Angels.

Space junk, cowboy space rock or something.

Throw em out if ya remember them...
