Moment Of Surrender stood out on a mediocre album ( by U2s standards) had it been on any other album it would not have had the same impact IMO .

Don't get me wrong I like the song but as far as "U2 classics" go I think it is not quite up there but that is a personal opinion.

We seem to be approaching a gap in this conversation that we will need to traverse. Or should we cross that bridge when we get to it?

The 3rd traverse

Not the first traverse, not the 2nd traverse,  but the THIRD traverse

Instant classic.

If Rolling Stone say so, perhaps.

Yes and no-- It is a greta song. It could be a classic in about 10 years--We need to see who it stands the test of time.

I totally agree.  Except "mediocre" is being kind.

imo, MOS and Fez-Being Born are the two songs that stick with me from NLOTH. Magnificent is up there too, but the live performances are really hit or miss. However, every time I hear MOS live performance I am astounded by how soulful it is. I wish they had followed the original process and completed their "modern hymns" style album.
I think they messed up in thinking that there have to be "hits" on an album.  Did Unforgettable Fire or Achtung Baby scream out with "hit songs"? Not really, a  lot of those albums were not cookie cutter. I had no issue with the music from NLOTH, but a lot of the lyrics were cringe worthy
