Is 'Moment of Surrender' a U2 classic?

Had this discussion with a U2 buddy of mine the other day, and he disagreed. For me, its up there, and in a few years it will probably be the song I come back to most on NLOTH. I love everything about it.

Is it a classic for you?

It's a very good song, but it will never be a classic. I think the last classic U2 wrote (as in, no documentary about the band, or no collection of songs, would be complete without it) was Vertigo. While MOS is better in every sense, I just think their legacy and canon of songs are what they are by this point.

A modern classic, but then I think COL is a modern classic too.

Its decent but no classic. May not even be played on the next tour. And really is there anything more embarrassing than bono trying to rap ?

It is for me. Probably won't be regarded as a classic by the wider public but I honestly couldn't give a toss. I wish U2 wouldn't too.

Not yet although it may well be some day. I cant define when a song makes this transition but I'll know it when I feel it. Of course this is just my opinion and therefore subjective.

Its by no means a perfect song but I have to wonder why he goes out of his way to make it worse live by doing so.

I think it's an instant classic to be honest. For me, it's far and away the best song on NLOTH. As Rolling Stones added, it's their greatest ballad since One, and I agree. I think the lyrics are some of Bono's best, and his singing is just raw and emotional. It's a very unique song as probably no other band could make a song like that. It was also somewhat of an anomaly as they only played it once in the studio because it was so damn perfect that first time. Eno is quoted as saying it was the most magnificent/special moment he had ever experienced in a studio with anyone. I think that alone says a lot about the quality of the song.

I quite liked the rap on the rare occassions that he didn't forget parts of it and repeated lines 3 times to cover it up.
