I'm torn. I'm all for a well-done creative album app--whatever that is.
But the thing is, it's all window dressing. The comparison Bono makes to "gatefold sleeves and lyrics" is apt....those things are cool in terms of packaging, but they don't mean diddly if the SONGS aren't any good. From someone who has a strong dislike for NLOTH, I'd say THAT'S what the band should be focusing on at this point. This could all be yet another indication that the band is far too big, with too much money and success, to even know what to do anymore.
All this said, if you want to see a cool app, the band Apparatjik (featuring members of Coldplay, Mew, and A-Ha), put out an iPad app in conjunction with their latest release. It acts like a sort of virtual magazine, with lots of weird articles, videos, graphics, and just absurd stuff--and even included a version of the album. It suits the band's dada aesthetic. But like all of these things, even as cool as it is--ultimately you just want good tunes to load on your iPod and listen to on your commute, or whatever.
