New U2 Album in 2013?

Does this have any merit to it? I'd actually be pleasantly surprised if U2 has an album out by next year...

I'm more surprised to see that Mercury's expecting a new Arcade Fire album next year. About a year ago, Win Butler said that it would be a long time before another AF album came out. Also, Metallica don't seem to be working too hard on the Death Pathetic followup.

I fully expect a new U2 album next year - and in the first half of the year, not the second.

I like your optimism, considering all of the talk of Brian Burton here and there, it wouldn't be too unrealistic to think them putting out an album in the first half of next year. Also, I agree, it is strange that Arcade Fire is slated to have an album out next year as well...Although, that would kind of make sense considering there's been 3 year gaps between each of their albums. The Suburbs came out in 2010, so who knows what could happen.

I believe they will have a new album in the first half of next year. Remember, they have been working on this album for a year already, so even a release in the early part of the year would put the album timeframe at a year-and-a-half. I honestly think their main holdup (given how much material they claim to have) is figuring out how to tour the album. Given that they've only just gotten off the road, they may want to have a break before the next tour. I believe they may have more than one album in the works, as Bono says, and may be planning a large comercial release for early in the year followed by a more fan-oriented release (like Zooropa was to Achtung Baby) a few months or a year later if the first album is successful, and not do a tour until maybe 2014. While I would like to see them tour next year, it seems unlikely, given the hugeness of their last tour and the fact that it only finished last summer.

I think if any of those albums come out next year, it will be in the second half of the year.  Metallica, for example, has been working on a new album but they have had some distractions. Still, I think that album will come out next year so I'm more hopeful about U2's album. And I would assume that a new Arcade Fire album will be coming soon.

I don't really get how this is good news - not that it's bad that an album's coming out, just that... isn't 2013 kind of predictable? It would be the standard 4 year gap. Was anybody thinking 2014 was more likely? Because to me, a 5 year gap is excessive, especially given the (relative) failure of NLOTH, but maybe i'm alone in thinking that.

Obviously hearing 2013 instead of 2014 - or that the band is quitting - is great, but in itself it's not really a 'surprise' to me, really it's just killing any hope of an album this autumn (although i admit that was overly optimistic).

Since The Joshua Tree, U2's spring releases have been disappointing to the band (Pop and NLOTH), which makes me think that regardless of the initial projection, we'll get an album in fall of 2013.
