Lack of emotional connection is what kills Please for me, which I am similarly confused by the love for.

I think it's brilliant. I' started listening to Pop much more lately and I'm really getting into this track again.

Brilliant tune. Sounds fantastic at Boston too.

That is a testament to just how classic a song it is. We have four different versions of the song essentially (Pop, Popmart, Elevation Tour and the Best of Mix) an

i read on here that the best of versions of the Pop songs are based on how they were played during the Elevation tour

Genius. I love it.

As for the best of version - sucks compared to the original but still infinitely better than any song U2 have done since.

Simply a great song. It has that classic U2 "feel" that U2 has had troubling finding in their music since then. It's my close second favorite song on Pop after If God Will Send His Angels. It's one of Edge's best riffs, and it should have become a live staple (as lots of songs on Pop should have been in my opinion...)

Nonetheless, a great song, and one of the many highlights from Pop.

It's got a lot of great parts.  One of my favorite U2 songs too.

Bass- from Adam's opening spinning part right before the drums kick in, to the grove throughout, the bass line is very memorable and is the backbone of the song.

Drums- Larry's catchy beat is very reminiscent of Madonna's "Justify My Love" in a good way and it plays well with Adam's bass line.  I also like the middle of the song where he does that nice roll right before "...cause I'm already gone, felt that way all along..."

Guitar - the super high riff is sonically piercing in a amazing, cosmic way.  Nice chord strumming in the chorus after Bono sings "Goodbye." Sparse guitar throughout but great when it shows up. Signature Edge.

Piano! - one of the few U2 songs to use piano and just sounds so classic and a perfect fit when it comes in with Bono singing "Goodbye" in each chorus.

Vocals - Catchy "Goodbye" chorus. Nice melody throughout with mid range to the falsetto parts "Cause I'm already gone" and "sun, sun, sun".
And of course the best part in the song is the very emotional, unforgettable delivery of the line near the end "It's an emotional, Good night, I'll be up with the sun. Are you still holding on?  I'm not coming down. Whoo-hoo.  I'm not coming down.  I'm not coming down."

Bono also gives a great, powerful delivery of those lines in the live Sarajevo version (after which Bono lost his voice for the rest of the concert):

I've always liked the song... at one time it was my favorite from Pop although that has waned as time has gone on.  Wake Up Dead Man is my favorite and Gone has drifted to the middle of the album for me.

I think Gone is amazing. Its lyrics are powerful, the screaming guitar is engaging, and I just love it when the bass kicks in at the beginning... I've grown more attached to it recently. Definitely a favorite from Pop.

Gets in my top ten U2 songs. What an awesome opening riff. The lyrics are fantastic too. What an underrated album on the whole.

Gone is rightfully unknown by non-U2 or casual-U2 fans.

And it is wrongfully overrated by the hardcore U2 fans.

Cheers,

J

You know, Jick, non-U2 fans and casual fans know ATYCLB and Bomb as much as they know Pop or Zooropa... Maybe one or two songs at most, that they heard on TV or radio, or some club.

There's not much difference between your most hated and loved U2 albums.

I really don't care what non U2 or casual U2 fans think.

Gone on album is great.

Remix has been sanitized for those who like their music a bit blander.

Add Jick to that list and we're in complete agreement.

Spot on. Like all Lillywhitewashed U2 songs, it lacks all the interesting parts. Plus, the vocal on the remake is bad.

The best of variant is just the Elevation live version done in the studio, and I care about as much for it.

I LOVE Pop and Gone is a huge part of that. I agree with all the positive comments about it on this board. However, I enjoy its role as an underdog. Of course that's just what u2 do, they make classic hits that don't always stir the public. I will never understand what makes songs popular or unpopular.
