Does anyone know if there is a way to create a virtual station on Pandora or any equivalent service where it streams random U2 songs without also streaming 'similar' artists. 'Similar' tends to mean Coldplay, REM and Simple Minds all of whom are talented but inferior to U2 in my book.

I like Spotify for this. Go on there and create a playlist of all U2 songs (they have quite a few to stream) and then just put that on shuffle. Since I started using Spotify (free on your computer) I've not used Pandora at all.
