I wonder where the money has come from considering they haven't toured this year.

Back catalogue sales can't amount to that much.

They can't include their investments in calculating U2's income, surely?

I don't think so, dear. I was just teasing.

From the article:

Methodology

Our estimates are based on total earnings from May 2011 to May 2012—the amount of money an act makes from record sales, touring, endorsements, merchandise sales and other ventures before subtracting management fees, legal costs and taxes (which can gobble up the bulk of a big payday). The totals were compiled with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as interviews with industry insiders including concert promoters, lawyers, managers, agents and, in some cases, the musicians themselves.

U2 was still on tour in 2011.

That explains it then.  Now we can all relax.

Huh? But the title is highest paid of 2012!

Also, what a ridiculous photo. It's Bono only and the backing band ain't even U2  >:(

I think it takes 6 months for them to crunch the numbers to put together these types of reports. They create their own year (fiscal) instead of using a proper calendar year.

The ranking is a joke because:

1. Dr. Dre is not a real "musician"

2.  Assuming arguendo that Dr. Dre is a "musician", sales of his Beats headphones have nothing to do with his "music" (and I am using the term loosely here to approximate what Dr. Dre and his fans think he makes)

Cheers,

J

Under Bono's pic on the list -

"The legendary Irish rockers wrapped up their record-breaking 360 tour—which grossed $736 million over three year—in August of 2011, just late enough to count a summer of touring in our scoring period."

So now the real reason for dragging out the tour is known.

Thanks, and thanks jen. Yeah, I won't care too much about such rankings. We know our babies are swimming in dough anyhow. Though this might be a legit trophy to wave in the noses of friends who are unaware or detracting of U2.

Not that I think the list is falsified, but I do want to mention that Elevation Partners owns controlling interest in Forbes magazine.
