Lifting up ATYCLB as some sort of masterpiece while calling Pop and NLOTH "mediocre".

I'm suddenly reminded of a popular Alanis Morissette song.

ATYCLB is not just "some sort of masterpiece." It is THE Masterpiece of U2.

All I will say is that Pop and NLOTH were commercial failures. Now can we get back to the main purpose of this thread of appreciating the greatest U2 album, ATYCLB?

I'm putting myself in with the small group that enjoyed ATYCLB. These days, it's rarely the one I grab if I want to put some U2 on, but I sure as hell wore out my copy when it came out. I even consider Wild Honey and IALW two of the better tunes on it, though they were not the ones that immediately caught my attention upon initial listens. However, I will say Walk On, which I DID enjoy initially, is difficult to listen to now as I'm pretty sick of it. I'd be fine with never hearing that live again.

That being said, I love Pop though. It was the first U2 album I purchased. I think its hard to compare the two though because they are so contrasting so I'm not going to say which one is better because I don't think I possibly can. They are two completely different things, aside from both being U2 albums.

I am also one that considers 1980s my decade of choice for U2 music, which I think is also a minority group here.

I wore mine out too. It was the first U2 album I ever bought. I was 14. It was a great starter album. Safe, completely unchallenging and nearly bubblegum in its softness and poppiness.

It served its purpose as a gateway drug before I dove into the heavier, more challenging stuff like Zooropa, Achtung Baby, Pop, and The Unforgettable Fire.

Now I virtually never grab the album to listen to.

a great collection of songs, but I can only rarely listen to it from beginning to end. usually I'll listen to any 5 or 6 and then go to something else.

some peak songwriting craft, though. I know I've bagged on Grace a lot here, but that's because I'd never warmed up to it until recently.

I don't think I've listened to the album once in two years

It's probably been longer since I've listened to it...but I haven't listened to AB in damn near 10 years.
