WOWY was a baby when it got the change of pace on Zoo, it's been done that way ever since for a reason I'm sure.   They changed their minds.

This is from Chicago on the first leg of the Joshua Tree tour.  I feel this is such a strong performance. 

Bono goes somewhere differently vocally between 4:55-5:30 and I get goosebumps everytime.  Larry is also really kicking it hard. 

I know the Rattle and Hum version is awesome but as far as unofficial versions, this ranks atop the rest.
I bought a two disc bootleg of this show on Ebay when I was 16.  This in my opinion is the best Joshua Tree show.

Just listened to imo best WOWY versions from each tour since '87 and its sad that the song has lost so much of its tempo, urgeny and passion.  Yes every song should be somewhat reinvented as the years go on both for the artist and fans sakes but only if it still does the original compositio justice.  Thanks you for this version, this is now the default setting for WOWY performances

really? I couldn't even get to the second verse, Bono's singing was so far out of tune. Flat became a noun.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though.  Having us sing the Ohhhhs creates an amazing sense of community in the crowd.  It was one of the most heart-stopping moments of my life, singing the Ohhhhs with thousands of other people, including my younger brother at his first ever concert in general, in the pit.

I've been singing the Ohhhs since he started doing it with Popmart, and you're right, it does get the crowd singing, but lets be truthful and realize he does that because he can't sing it anymore twice in a song so he lets the audience do it the 2nd time. Take a look at the 87 LA version and how much emotion he puts into the Ohhhs at the end. I miss that Bono.

Just my opinion, and since I'm listening to it at the moment.  If Bono can sing Elevation the way he does, he could sing the Oooooh's in WOWY the way he used to, I think it's a choice not to.

This is how this song is supposed to be played live and sound. Of course it should not be attempted anymore because Bono just can not sing it like he used to do. The horrific version from 360 is not a patch on this. The song is brilliant, but I can not bring myself to listen to it anymore because of the butchering it has take over the years.

I don't think Bono's voice is the main problem, it's his energy.
What makes Bono so great besides the quality of his voice, is that he used to sing every song with power, intensity and passion, always giving everything. Even during performances when his voice was shot he could still make it great because of the amount of emotion he can convey into his singing. Despite the voice, you can feel that he's giving everything he's got and you can connect with that. In general I missed this during 360, as said his voice isn't the issue, I think it's in better shape then it was during the Elevation and Vertigo tours. To me Bono seemed too relaxed. He sang the songs and they sounded OK, but he didn't sing them with real intensity and emotion.

I still say he wants to sound broken during  the song, it fits the mood.
