Tour Tidbits

I'm sure most of you have seen this on the main site already:
http://www.atu2.com/news/article.src?ID=5250

All I have to say is sorry Vienna and Austria.  And I also feel sorry for the abuse the Jehovah's Witnesses are likely to take for squeezing U2 out.  First come, first served.

Anyway, the part that sticks out to me is "all the other 120 concert dates of the upcoming tour are already in the planning stage."

Sounds like they're not scaling back at all as the Vertigo Tour had 5 legs and 131 concert dates! ;D

Rumors from u2-forum.com  (I repeat, Rumors)

"A Mate Met Steve Matthews, MD of Principal Yesterday

Steve basically said that touring will be very different this time around due to family commitments. Stadium tour of US a definite with shows on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights only. Extensive European tour as well but no shows in Asia / Australia.

Steve also said that the set design is 'massive'. Basically, the biggest development in concert going since Zoo TV. Its fairly radical and involves audience interaction."

"Thats the story I'm afraid. Steve said that the scale of the show was too big to justify Australasia.

Part of the audience interaction is to do with texting and crowd video content that you can submit prior to going to a show. You'll be able to upload a video to u2.com. The audience video is then used in the visuals for the show. Steve said the concept was to extend Zoo TV which drew on TV content from around the world - this is the fans content. Real life. They envisage fans making the soundbites / visuals this time around. Willie is going to be busy!!!

Also, Steve said the tour is not called after any of the songs on the album but a lyric of one of the songs."

I'll be shocked if it's not just called the "Meet Me in the Sound" tour.

This rumor, btw, if true, is devastatingly cool.

If they're seriously thinking of weekends only for a 120-date tour, they'll be on the road 'til the end of 2010. Metallica did the 1st Summer Sanitarium that way, and it took 2 months to do 18 or 19 shows.

Even if it's true, they're only doing weekends for the U.S. leg.  If they start Europe in May, as is expected, they could be done with Europe by sometime in July.

IMO, the main reason why that statement is suspect is that that schedule would only allow for 2 shows/week, because I don't think Bono's voice can handle 3 shows in a row.

Then again, I'm not sure how many U.S. shows they're doing.  They like to sell out, and there are not many U.S. markets that will sell out stadiums.

Chicago, NY/NJ, Philly, Boston, DC, L.A., SF/SJC area, Miami, Georgia and maybe Detroit are the only ones that seem likely to sell out.

It won't happen in Dallas or Houston.  I'd be surprised if Denver sells out, but they have typically played 2 shows there, so it's possible.  All that said, I kinda think they might play NOLA even though their last trek there resulted in maybe 20k tickets sold.

That's only dozen or so markets (with multiple shows likely in NY/NJ, PHI, BOS, L.A. and SF/SJC).

But what do I know.  I've said for years that they wouldn't do stadiums here, because they couldn't sell out and now they're going to do it.  Should be interesting.

I also wonder what the NJ/Ticketmaster Deal will do to change the way tix are sold online.  Hope it doesn't make it harder for out of town people to get them....cause I know they're not coming to me.

I have been told by someone close to U2's sound engineer that the US leg of the tour will start in mid September.

Let Me In The Sound Tour is the most obvious tour name.

I don't know where this weekend only gigs thing, is coming for, it seems completely unpractical, unless there is so much gear it takes a few days to set up and strip down, so maybe fewer shows in bigger places.

What about the "Oh, oh, oh" Tour?  That's featured in every song! :D

Or "God is Love" Tour?  From Stand Up Comedy.

Or my favorite:  "The Dark Star" Tour?  From Moment of Surrender.

If these items are true (weekends only, massive stage set up, stadiums only) it will raise at least one interesting logistical issues, due to the extremely long tear down/load/unload/set up times which will no doubt be involved:

Will they just do 3 night stands ?
Or will they try and do different cities for each of the 3 nights (they better be close to each other) ?

For example, if they play the Northwest, they'd have to do Vancouver/Seattle/Portland, or 2 in one place and one in the other because no way could they do a show in say Seattle one night and then another in NoCal the next, so I can see the potential for large chunks of the country not getting a show

One obvious benefit of only doing weekends or shows three nights a week and 3 night stands is they won't have to hire as many crew for the set up and take down.  Longer time to do it equals fewer crew members equals fewer paychecks to hand out equals more money in U2's pockets.

Relatively speaking, their costs will be about the same as always, doing about 3 shows/week is what they did on Popmart.
