New Tour Stage Design?
« on: October 29, 2008, 09:11:00 PM »
Anyone else want to speculate on the stage design for the tour to support the new album?

My idea is based on the evolution from the "B-stage" setup through the heart and the ellipse, and based on the supposed album title.  I would venture that at least for US arenas, the stage will have a massive ellipse heading around the "horizon" of the arena floor.  Every floor seat would then be in the "ellipse", and everyone throughout the arena would get to see Bono and Edge (and maybe Adam) up close and right in front of them.

The only problem with this idea is that one of the best parts of the last 2 tours was when the whole band would come to the tip of the heart/ellipse and play a song or 2.  If the ellipse is that big, they couldn't do that, except maybe with Larry strolling around the band, maybe with his "very own conga".

I was wondering about this. Maybe a T-bar kind of design? Like this: (I'm a visual person :P)

I        I
I----- I
I------I
I        I

So There's the main stage then a runway to another rectangular stage which they can parade up up down on :D This would allow space for the entire band. Problem is would the front stage block the view for the main stage?

That would do it too.  It would let the "B-stage" moments be at the center of the arena, but still let Bono and Edge get closer to all the fans.

Their stage design has become so central to how they do their shows, and has been copied/modified by other acts (The Rolling Stones at the super bowl comes to mind).  Remembering back to the early ZooTV shows how the B-stage completely changed what they were doing, and then with the heart it took it to a whole new level (Bono doing laps for Streets, etc.).  The new planned set up has to be something big, and I can't wait to see it, whatever it is.

I'd love to see a Metallica type "in the middle" stage, no heart/ellipse nonsense where marginal fans can get access to the best spot. Give the best spot to whoever gets there first and allows for a good view from all areas of the arena.

You can see many uploaded videos on youtube of how this looks

That could work quite well - sort of a b-stage all the time.

My only bit where I am unsure is because of my last time seeing them in concert - Charlotte for Vertigo (2nd pass through the states), I sat behind the band somewhat high up, because when we finally figured out how they were actually handling sales, that was what was left.  It was a great show (and I am glad that I got in), but they were playing it primarily to the folks across the arena from us.  I think Bono and Edge looked up (practically straight up) and acknowledged the folks in our area a handful of times during the show.  I don't blame them, but it was a bit disheartening to be behind them.

My concern is that with a "theater in the round" approach, then they are looking away from you more than 1/2 the time.  They could probably make it work, and we would all be a lot closer to the stage.  I guess if Adam is playing to one side and Edge to the other and Larry's drum kit spins around from time to time (Vertigo?) then it could be a great show.  It might actually be better, if no one can really say that they were behind the band.

Track down live footage from this year's Foo Fighters show at Wembley (it won't be hard to do). FF did something I'd been waiting to see: a stadium stage that afforded 360-degree seating. When you see the design, you'll see that (with very little modification) it would be easy to set it up for an "in the round" style show.
The one major problem with in-the-round shows, however, is this: the sound isn't as good.
