Hello everyone,

I'm going to Death Valley / Grand Canyon in September (18-27th) and I was wondering if there was anybody interested in coming along (esp the Death Valley / Joshua Tree Natl Park part...obviously, the U2 related areas). I know it's short notice and quite a restricted time line but you just never know, right?... I was supposed to be going with a friend of mine but something came up and she can't come any more and since my ticket is already purchased and arranged, I think I'll go anyway.. it just won't be as much fun going alone...
So... who's coming?

If you chip in for flights, there's a lot of airlines that fly from melbourne to LA.

You'll love it, great place but this time of year, yikes. H-O-T!

Very funny... I'll win the Jackpot and then I'll buy you the tickets ;)
That's the time I can get away from work... so I'll just have to reeeeeally feel it for what it is! ;)

I went in late october and it was 41C in the daytime.

Badwater basin is excellent, try to see Zabriskie both in the morning (6am) and at sunset, totally different. Spend as much time as you can at the national park, it's amazing.

Thanks for the tips! Any other places I shouldn't miss in the area?

Well, Pahrump is AMAZING!

:-)

Artists drive, racetrack playa, scotty's castle... all great. Like most national parks though it's not about the destination but the drive itself. There's some great short hikes out of furnace creek, the ranger station has them all mapped out and even in the heat they're just not that far or tough. Try to sleep early and get up early and do the more strenuos hikes in the morning.

The lookouts around badwater (at the top of the cliffs) are incredible and worth the drive.

Wish I could come! I went during the 360 Tour and made it to the point, but our car broke down 30 miles from the tree site and we never made it. I plan to go back. Travel Tip: when you go down a steep hill in extreme heat, shift to D2, otherwise you bend your rotors. That's what happened to me.

D2? Rubbish! Switch to neutral! :-)

I will adhere to your advice next time Briscoe. I know these fast cars will do me no good.

I'm going first week in Sept this year (2014) for a wander around the U2 spots and have a look for a certain tree.
I'm from New Zealand and am travelling alone.Any one else stupid enough to be in the same area then ?
