As cool as Dylan is, and as much of a fan I am, I'm kind of questioning this.  Typically the Nobel committee (is it a committee?) cite what piece in particular warranted the prize (i.e. The Old Man and the Sea for Hemmingway) so I'm curious what it is for Dylan.  There were a lot of protest songs in the 60's, many of which are more iconic than what Dylan was doing, and yeah he's had a long career, but after the 70's can most people name a significant Dylan track?  Plus there is the whole issue of plagiarism from the early 2000's.  Is this an attempt for the prize to garner some attention from people who otherwise wouldn't care?  If Dylan deserves this award does that mean so does Lennon/McCarthy?
Maybe the committee can clear it up and just say it's for Tarantula...

From what I've read on Nobel Prize's for Literature, they have not always been without controversy.  While they can be in recognition of a particular work, they are also often in recognition of the collected works of an author, especially when the authors are poets.  Just browsing the official page for thee Literature prize, the brief summary for each prize winner is more general and infers a collected intent. Hemmingway is one of the few winners that is referred to for a specific work.

With Dylan, I suspect the intent of the prize is to mostly recognize his work from his start through the early 70's when he was at his best.

And, I'd hardly say that Lennon and McCartny deserve one.  The biggest limitation being that you cannot win a Nobel prize unless you are alive.  That rule has actually proved to be a problem for a few would be winners who died in the year they were to win.

There was a good write-up on Pitchfork to this effect.  Boiled down: Dylan writes great lyrics, but they are still part of a song--meaning that the melody, voice, way they're sung as PART of the art.  His lyrics are good, but they aren't literature in the sense that true literature is, which can be appreciated simply as the words they are, and not how those words are "performed".

They still need to get Dave A back behind the kit. Matt's far superior to all the rest of their drummers, but Dave fit their musical aesthetic perfectly. Matt's talents are just wasted in that band

Makes you wonder what a "U2" edition of Monopoly would be like.

RHCP's Chad Smith sings the U-M fight song onstage in Columbus, OH. Goes over about as well as you'd expect:   You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

There's been at least one explosion in the arena in Manchester, England, where Ariana Grande is supposed to be performing tonight. Don't know yet if she was onstage at the time. Police are confirming fatalities. More forthcoming.
