NEW: Updating Policy on Username Changes
« on: November 18, 2013, 11:57:44 AM »
Hey gang,

Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback in this thread about the ability for forum members to change their usernames: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

We know there are pros and cons to members being able to change usernames at will, and that thread produced a variety of opinions on the matter. However, we believe that the confusion created by changed usernames far outweighs any other considerations. When members change their username, it inconveniences other users and the mods because we don't immediately know who we're talking to. That's not a smart way to build a community.

With that in mind, we've decided on the following changes to the username policy:

1) Members will not be able to manually change their usernames as of January 1, 2014.

2) After that date, members with a good reason to have their username changed can do so by making a direct request to the mods, who will consider the request and aim to make a decision as quickly as possible. As January 1st approaches, we'll share more about how requests can be made, and what we'll consider when asked to change a username.

This gives everyone about six weeks to settle on a permanent username that will show up when you use the forum.

Those of you who consider your username to be an opportunity to show your creativity can still do so via your avatar and/or the "personal text" that displays with your profile info.

Thanks again for your feedback in that previous thread. If anyone has questions about the policy change, let us know and we'll do our best to answer.

Matt & the Mods

Yes, the avatar and personal text work well for creativity. Good call, mods!  :) 8)

Up in that original message, we promised to share a bit more about how to request username changes after January 1, and what our approach will be when considering those requests. The moderation team has decided on this wording, which will be included in the new Forum Rules/Guidelines (that we'll be publishing soon):

Choose a username that you love, because you cannot change it after you've registered. However, in rare and special circumstances (such as marriage, divorce or other legitimate reasons), the forum moderators will consider changing the displayed username for an individual user. Requests can be made via email to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. Be sure to include your current displayed username and a detailed explanation of why you'd like it changed.

This will probably be the last reminder that the username policy is changing on January 1st.
