Thanks to Rdio, I recently explored some early Simple Minds:

Life In a Day
Real to Real Cacophony
New Gold Dream 81-82-83-84

I'm not sure it did much to improve them in my eyes--they've always been "ok", but rarely better--but it was an interesting trip, anyway.

I didn't know who the question was directed to. I think it's basically the same songs with a different band, so probably not worth it.

It's not... unless you are a diehard Beach Boys fan.  I've listened to both.  The Brian Wilson one is a bit more polished, but I think that is a detriment a bit (it's 2000's polish on a 1960's album).  I think the sequencing was a bit different, but anyone can rearrange the older tracks to match what Brian Wilson put out.  I've only listened to either one a couple of times total.  It's a bit weird, but only when compared to other Beach Boys stuff, and even then, the stupid little EP that accompanied the original Holland album is quite a bit weirder than Smile.  Then again, I'm a PF/Syd Barrett fan; you'd have to be weirder than that for me to think it's too much.

It was to either of you. Ya I can't imagine it would be that much better or different.

^That's exactly what I thought about the "weirdness"... that those who are familiar with Pink Floyd (especially the early years) would not think Smile is all that weird. We listened to it again in class on Monday and my teacher conceded that his main problem was the lyrics- I agree that the lyrics are the stranger part, and I was expecting weird *music.* It was an interesting education nonetheless.

Hm, really?  I do remember liking that album quite a bit when it came out, but the overproduction and completely non-sensical lyrics make that album an extremely rare exercise in nostalgia at this point.
