I'd be content with a few of the new songs having unexpected time signatures if the band wants to be experimental.

It seems like some folk are writing off the new album before it's even released. Who knows? Maybe it will surprise the most critical of U2 fans.

I keep listening to Bono's response at 22 minutes into this interivew:

"We'll do it on the next album even more..."
I know it is Bono just talking and was from 3 years ago, but I keep hoping...

I'd say U2 could still do with an Underworld collaboration very nicely (having briefly worked together on the Pop sessions). Seriously, Underworld's last album was incredible.

Listening to the Dave Fanning and Bono interview, it's very interesting to hear Bono talk about what the band can still do and have done. He's very defiant in how he comes across and to a large degree he really knows what his limitations are of the band but he strives for greatness, even after 40 years and that in itself is really quite commendable.

He clearly has a shrewd businessman like approach/side to him and one could arguably say that is what got U2 to where they are today.
Without Bono it's clear you could say the band wouldn't be half the band they were but you could say that about any member. His desire to get the band heard and to learn a craft really drove them to the top and it still does.

I have high hopes for SOE as we all do, but I trust his judgement. Sure they get it wrong on occasions but to a large degree they get it right. Being in a band is tough at the best of times but that interview is so telling that the brotherhood of the band is so important to him. He is nothing without it.

Agreed that Underworld's "Barbera..." is a great album, just too short. They managed to update their sound, try new things...in ways I didn't know I wanted. I suppose it's easier with 2 people, one mainly instrumental. It would be like Bono and Edge. The thing is, I believe they'd still work with U2. As a side project, Hyde's double album with Eno...was everything U2 needs.

Bono said yesterday the album is "nearly completed". Okay, yes he also said that a few years ago, but at least it's not "getting lost in the music" bo****ks.
