We know that we fear to win
And so we end before we begin
This one's pretty good, as is the "Itís hard to listen while you preach" line.

But I don't think anything tops
"Iris standing in the hall
She tells me I can do it all
Iris wakes to my nightmares
Donít fear the world it isnít there
Iris playing on the strand
She buries the boy beneath the sand,
Iris says that I will be the death of her
It was not me"
be it in lyrical content or delivery.

There are too many excellent lyrics to list, but these ones particularly move me because they're so true:

I've seen for myself, there's no end to grief
That's how I know, and why I need to know that there is no end to love

The ache in my heart
Is so much a part of who I am

And a heart that is broken
Is a heart that is open

And "Iris says that I will be the death of her / It was not me" is one of the most powerful lyrics Bono has ever written. One of those lines that chokes me up every time, like "Don't leave me here alone" in SYCMIOYO.

"If the door is open it isn't theft, you can't return to where you've never left."

Perhaps not the best SOI lyrics, but one of my favourites.

I'm really loving:

I have a will for survival
So you can hurt me, then hurt me some more
I can live with denial, but you're not my troubles anymore

And the whole last part of Cedarwood Road

If the door is open it isnít theft
You canít return to where youíve never left
Blossoms falling from a tree
They cover you and cover me
Symbols clashing, bibles smashing
Paint the world you need to see
Sometimes fear's the only place we can call our home
Cedarwood Road

And heart that is broken
Is a heart that is open, open, open

Iris wakes to my nightmares. Don't fear the world, it isn't there.

Cant choose one.. cause this album is just sooo sooo on fleek. So ill go through entire album -->
The Miracle"
Yeah I wanted to be the melody,
Above the noise, above the hurt.
-- Its why I turn to music .. to rise above the hurt.

EBW"
You Know where my heart is.. the same place thats yours has been.
- I want a man that isnt Bono to say this to me.

California"
Stolen days you donít give back
- Just because it is so so relevant to life

Song for someone"
You let me in to a conversation
A conversation only we could make
You break and enter my imagination
Whateverís in there itís yours to take
I was told Iíd feel nothing the first time
You were slow to heal but this could be the night

--- AHH so sensual

Iris "
"THE ACHE IN MY HEART. ITS SO MUCH A PART
OF WHO I AM..
-There is no end to grief. It ends up becoming you

Volcano"
Your eyes were like landing lights
They used to be the clearest blue
Now you donít see so well
The futureís gonna land on you
- Poetic sh**t

RBW"
The worst things in the world are justified by belief
-such a powerful sentence

CR"If the door is open it isnít theft
You canít return to where youíve never left
Blossoms falling from a tree they cover you and cover me
Symbols clashing, bibles smashing
Paint the world you need to see
Sometimes fear is the only place we can call home
Cedarwood Road

A HEART THAT IS BROKEN
IS A HEART THAT IS OPEN
- Insane all round..like an explosion of frustration

SLABT"
Where thereís no daylight, thereís no healing
Tomorrow dawns like somebody else's suicide.

TIWYCRMN-
Old man knows that I never listen
So how could I have something to say
-Story Of My Life

TT"God now you can see me
Iím naked and Iím not afraid
My bodyís sacred and Iím not ashamed
- So effing Powerful

LH -Yes I can change the world

The poor breaking bread thatís made out of stone
The rich man wonít eat, heís eating, alone
Thatís easy
But I canít change the world
In me.
-♡♡♡♡

TCB-Cos where we come from weíre not always kind
The human story is what love leaves behind

Weíre the ghosts of love and we haunt this place

SLAB alt version "
When you are weakest Iíll be strong enough for you,
Dreams, the ones where you are fearless
Canít break whatís broken, you are tearless
Steal back your innocence
Thatís what they stole from you
&
The people staring from the street donít know what youíve got
&
Take care of your heart until it is light
Where you stand, where you fall is where I kneel
To take your heart back to where you can feel
Like a child, a child.
- My preffered SLAB. So much more powerful, empathetic and heart wrenching ...

The Troubles ALT VERSION- Looking at the stars that never looked so bright before
This crooked heart it never felt so light before
A brand new man, Iím a brand new Man.
- Another powerful ode from B

I love the whole section:

Born for bliss, born for this.
Every human life begins with a kiss.

I love the way Bono delivers the lines.
Second that ♡♡♡
That Whole song is so infectiously delicious

You know how sometime you listen to a song, hear a lyric and actually think about it for a little. That happened to me recently with RBW.

The worst things in the world are justified by belief.

Brilliant.

Totally agree, that minute is my favourite bit of the album both musically and lyrically

My favorite:
Everything I ever lost now has been returned...the most beautiful sound I ever heard.
This is how I felt after seeing them for the 1st time here in Phoenix.

Even though I've never loved this record, I have to say that the lyrics in general are among the best Bono has ever written (Edge helped a lot it seems).

With this album, there were several lines in particular that stuck out on first listen. These repeatedly go through my head, or I find myself thinking about them out of the blue.

"We got language so we can't communicate, religion so I can love and hate, music so I can exaggerate my pain, and give it a name."

"I thought I heard the captain's voice, but it's hard to listen while you preach."

"If there is a light, don't let it go out."
"I'm a long way from your hill of Calvary, and I'm a long way from where I was and where I need to be."

"Iris says that I will be the death of her; it was not me."

"My body's not a canvas; my body's now a toilet wall."
"Boy sees his father crushed under the hate of a cross in a passion where the passion is hate."
"The worst things in the world are justified by belief."

"You cannot return to where you never left."

"Old man knows that I never listen, so how could I have something to say."

"You think it's easier to know your own tricks, well it's the hardest thing you'll ever do."

SOI is, by far, Bono's best album lyrically since Pop.

Isn't it 'can communicate'?
