Isn't it 'can communicate'?
Yeah, it doesn't make sense the other way.

No, it's "can't". Bono makes it clearer by singing "cannot" in live performances.

Exactly. That whole section is about oxymorons and how people twist things. Like wars being fought in the name of religion (similar to the "worst things in the world are justified by belief" line).

"The worst things in the world are justified by belief" is probably my favorite SOI lyric, really speaks to me.

I could second all the comments yet. The lyrics have such powerful, vivid imagery. It's certainly one of the albums strengths!
I've also completely fallen in love with California:

"I didn't call you. Words could scare a thought away"
Says it all about how words have a tendency to mess up what you're actually trying to say. Another oxymoron, I guess!

"Everyone’s a star in our town
It’s just your light gets dimmer if you have to stay
In your bedroom
In a mirror..."

This is for me the definition of wanderlust! The feeling that your own house/life is more like prison, holding you back. Always dreaming of,  searching for and expecting something bigger, something more to come. And staying is, in this case, synonymous for letting your dream just fade away.
Love it!

"Every shipwrecked soul knows what it is to live without intimacy."

Relatable.

For me...the standout lyric...that most rings true for me....especially this past while

"God knows its not easy, taking on the shape of someone else's pain"

I was walking along the street a few weeks back, listening to this song (instant u2 classic for me, from the moment i first heard it) and the gorgeous middle 8 came up, with the above lyric and it just hit home like never before....as its exactly what i have been doing for so long, where certain improtant people in my life are concerned...and i dont mind admitting, i had a tear in my eye, upon hearing them few words

In an era of throw away lyrics, where self obsession rules and as Bono said "there is no rage in music anymore" when there's plenty to rage about. SOI really resonated with me, every lyric has a significant meaning; I don't think I've ever listening to an album so much as SOI. No wonder it took 5 years to make!

Song For Someone
If there is a light
You can't always see
There is a world
We can't always be
If there is a kiss
I stole from your mouth
And there is a light
Don't let it go out

Mine is: "I'm naked and I'm not afraid. My body's sacred and I'm not ashamed."

I have some scars from where I've been

You paint the world you need to see

Don't fear the world, it isn't there

You've got a face not spoiled by beauty, I have some scars from where I've been, you've got eyes that can see right through, they're not afraid of anything they've seen

Iris (Hold Me Close)
The ache in my heart, Is so much a part of who I am

Raised By Wolves
Boy sees his father crushed under the weight, Of a cross in a passion where the passion is hate

The worst things in the world are justified by belief

California (There Is No End To Love
I've seen for myself, There's no end to grief

Song For Someone
You break and enter my imagination, Whatever's in there it's yours to take

Cedarwood Road
Sometimes fear's the only place that we can call our home

I would echo the above lyric.  "I'm naked and I'm not afraid.  My body's sacred and I'm not ashamed."  A stunningly beautiful  lyric in which Bono asserts his personal freedom in the face of whatever demon he faced down.
