Had a chance to listen to the first few songs tonight....
Reminded again how I love Larry's drumming on October and War--
feels punchy and expressive in a different way than later drumming.

And ran across this quote which made me think of Fire.  :)
"If the landscape reveals one certainty, it is that the extravagant gesture is the very stuff of creation. After the one extravagant gesture of creation in the first place, the universe has continued to deal exclusively in extravagances, flinging intricacies and colossi down aeons of emptiness. . . . The whole show has been on fire from the word go."
- Annie Dillard

Oh, I love this, Faris!! It definitely does invoke images that makes me think of Fire!

Finished listening to the album last night....
Listened to October (the song) several times over.
Just found it so calming.  I sensed this long expanse of time, stretching across aeons...
calling me to take a longer view of time (and life).
With A Shout, as always, didn't fail to lift me up too; but Stranger in A Strange Land
grabbed my attention again as well.  I need to listen to it more.

The other night, Rejoice and Fire came up on random.  Both were a lovely, out of nowhere feeling.
But this and some other thoughts rolling around in my head, caused me to stop (and really do a double-take), and realize these young fellows were dealing with so much.  I can not imagine myself at 20-21 dealing with the issues of rising fame (slowly at this point but rising nonetheless and all the work that goes into it), the decisions to stay in the band or not which were almost literally pulling them apart.  And in the midst of it all, still trying to make good music that they believed in. Really tough issues for such a young (tender?) age.
This also reminded me of the BB King quote (speaking of When Love Comes to Town, off RnH movie): "These are mighty heavy lyrics for such a young man."
Maybe they had heavy music and heavy lyrics for such young men because they had seen a lot and dealt with much for their age . . . ?

Some young people have to deal with real issues like drug abuse, domestic abuse, racial abuse, sexual dysfunction, self harm... they didn't really have much to deal with. From what's documented, their issues were ones of faith and not much else (apart from Adam who didn't believe). Hyperbole aside, October is a great record.

Its all relative I guess to the individual and certainly in the case of Bono and Larry they were still coming to terms with the early death of one of their parents. I would see that as a real issue but as i say it probably depends on the resilience of the individual impacted.

Dude, I know what it's like to lose a parent at an early age. My dad died in a freakin' road accident and I was traumatized at that point, I was 16 and I loved my dad. Bono lost his mother at around the same age. To say that its not a real issue is to lose grasp of reality itself.

SG, Juju and Sing...missing my October friends..

Stranger, stranger in a strange land
He looked at me like I was the one who should run
We asked him to smile for a photograph
Waited a while to see if we could make him laugh
The soldier asked for a cigarette
His smiling face I can't forget
He looked at me across the street

But that's a long way here
Oh, and I wish you were here
Oh, and I wish you were here

Stranger, stranger in a strange land
He looked at me like I was the one who should run
I watched as he watched us get back on the bus
I watched the way it was
The way it was when he was with us
And I really don't mind sleeping on the floor
But I couldn't sleep after what I saw
I wrote this letter to tell you the way I feel

Oh I wish you were here
Oh I wish you were here
To see what I could see
To hear
And I wish you were here

Yes, miss the fellow October lovers.  :(
Stranger in a Strange Land caught my ear yesterday.
We were in the car (trip) yesterday and had just finished listening to War when hubs put in JT.  My eldest pushed the eject button and said couldn't we listen to October instead?  (and so we did)  Yaaay!  :)

Wow!   Really?  You must be so proud!

October and R&H were the first U2 albums I listened to end to end.   R&H was a lot easier to like initially.   More sonically accessible.   October's rawness always drew me back to it, but it took me a while to really fall in love with it.   Your eldest (son?) must have such mature and discerning tastes!    ;D
