U2 has had some great opening bands during their tours.

I can say that my personal favorite was No Doubt.

Slane (1st gig) - August 25th 2001, was with any doubt, the best support lineup for any U2 gig I have seen personally.
The support included: Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Coldplay and they were both outstanding.

The second Slane gig(September 1st) had Moby and Ash who were both good.

Other than that, the Kings Of Leon(US 2005), Snow Patrol(Dublin 2005). B.B. King was great too, on the Love Town Tour(Dublin 1989) and Ash weren't half bad (Dublin 1997)

Though i didn't see the Zoo TV tour, the Pixies opened for them on some dates, not sure when. But i LOVE the Pixies and would of died to of gone to that show. The Pixies then broke up when they finished the tour, or sometime shortly after.

Public Enemy - The best!

Kings of Leon - Turned into one of my favorite bands.
The Pretenders - Just a great band.
Oasis - Not a favorite of mine, but put on a good show.

And also, in '86 at the 'Conspiracy of Hope' Tour, Peter Gabriel played before U2, as U2 were the headlining band.

The Alarm.  Other bands have done very nice jobs (Garbage was surprisingly good), but none were The Alarm.

Cast at Leeds Roundhay park Popmart tour . It was absolutely bucketing  it down with rain Cast came on really lifted everyone, quite ironic that one of Casts best songs was  'Sandstorm' which was the complete opposite of the weather on the day.

Also The Killers Cardiff millennium stadium Vertigo tour and stereo Mc's Leeds roundhay park ZooTv tour.

Worst by a country mile Marxman !

All the boys at the 87 Wembley Stadium gig liked 'The Pretenders'. Or more pacifically Chrissie Hynde.

Oh, singnomore, I am so jealous.  You saw The Alarm.  All the bands listed here that opened for U2 are beyond fantastic, but you are so right.  None will ever compare to the Alarm.  You haven't seen a show till you see The Alarm and U2 together.  Back in the 80's, they played together often at The Ritz in Manhattan. It just took your breath away.  I am so happy to hear Mike Peters has beat his cancer and those guys are together again.  I will check it out to see if they will get to New York.  Also, you can't forget Lone Justice in this bunch.  Maria Mc Kee went solo and moved to Dublin.  She put out some great stuff assisted by members of U2 through the years.  She has a great voice.

Other than the Waterboys, U2's almost always had crappy support bands for their Detroit dates. :(
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and Primus were pretty good, though.

As far as openers in other places, I would've loved to see Interpol and Idlewild supporting U2; they each did a couple of the UK Vertigo dates. I don't think they were ever on the same show, however.

What else? Hmmm, Cleveland in '87, when The Pretenders and Los Lobos were the openers. The Velvet Underground on some of those Zooropa dates, too.
