I disappeared in you
You disappeared from me
I gave you everything you ever wanted
It wasn't what you wanted

She is the avalanche
She is the thunder
She is the waves and
She pulls me under

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

You say love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

I can lose myself, you I can't live without

Every human life begins with a kiss
So Cruel is definitely up there among U2's discography, lyrically.

"You say when he hits you, you don't mind; because when he hurts you, you feel alive"

"It's true we are immune, when fact is fiction and tv reality; And today the millions cry, we eat and drink whilst tomorrow they die"

"Boys and girls go to a school, and girls they make children, not like this one"

"You say in love there are no rules"

"And I wish you were here"

I listened to The Fly for more than a year before I really heard and understood my favorite couplet Bono's ever written:

They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by the moon...
You know I don't see you when she walks in the room.

Even the source of one's joy and life can be temporarily obscured by the right object (person/thought/belief/etc.) when aligned properly. Brilliant.

Best u2 lyric for me:

And you can swallow
Or you can spit
You can throw it up
Or choke on it
And you can dream
So dream out loud
You know that your time is coming 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down....

Honourable mentions to:

Get it right
There's no blood thicker than ink
Hear what I say
Nothings as simple as you think

Wake up
Some things you can't get around
I'm in you
More so when they put me in the ground...

Don't believe in forced entry
Don't believe in rape
But every time she passes by
Wild thoughts escape.
Don't believe in Death Row
Skid row or the gangs.
Don't believe in the Uzi
It just went off in my hands.
I, I believe in love.....

In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they'd learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy.
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy.
You, you said you'd wait till the end of the world.

Wow, I didn't even think about Dirty Day, an tha. That whole song is full of great lyrics, I'd add this:

You're looking for explanations
I don't even understand
If you need someone to blame
Throw a rock in the air
You'll hit someone guilty

Dirty Day is an absolute masterpiece in my book.

A brilliant song - the kind of music I came to love u2 for.

It is that kind if intensity and grit I love about u2...

Now i know people will say it is all part of the bands diversity and the light and shade of them etc......but songs like Dirty Day are the reason I can't stand stuff like Crazy Tonight, Elevation, Yahweh etc. (Most of their post Pop output) it is like a completely different band and a completely different genre...

Mother - am I still your son?
You know I've waited for so long to hear you say so
Mother, you left and made me someone
Now I'm still a child, but no one tells me "no"

^ Bono peaked right there.

Pop is full of great lyrics, from the same song I love these lines:

Lookin' for a sound that's gonna drown out the world
Lookin' for the father of my two little girls
Got the swing got the sway got my straw in lemonade
Still looking for the face I had before the world was made
