Mother - am I still your son?
You know I've waited for so long to hear you say so
Mother, you left and made me someone
Now I'm still a child, but no one tells me "no"

^ Bono peaked right there.
Pop is full of great lyrics, from the same song I love these lines:

Lookin' for a sound that's gonna drown out the world
Lookin' for the father of my two little girls
Got the swing got the sway got my straw in lemonade
Still looking for the face I had before the world was made

Bono was at his best lyrically on Pop - so many great lyrics..

Jesus, Jesus help me
I'm alone in this world
And a f*****-up world it is too.

Tell me, tell me the story
The one about eternity
And the way it's all gonna be....

Take the colours of my imagination
Take the scent hanging in the air
Take this tangle of a conversation
Turn it into your own prayer.
With my fingers as you want them
With my nails under your hide
With my teeth at your back
And my tongue to tell you the sweetest lies....

September... streets capsizing...
spilling over down the drain
...shards of glass splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain...
october... talking getting nowhere...
November... December... remember...
are we just starting again...? .....

You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy
Then you learn to like the way it feels.
You hurt yourself, you hurt your lover
Then you discover
What you thought was freedom is just greed....

I wonder how Bono went from writing that to this just a couple of years later:

In the days
When we were swinging from the trees
I was a monkey
Stealing honey from a swarm of bees

I'd agree it's totally baffling - U2 lyrics have been to a greater extent pretty good on all the albums up to and including POP. It's almost like U2 had a musical and lyrical lobotomy since then

In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they'd learned to swim

Outside, somebody's outside
Somebody's knocking at the door.
There's a black car parked at the side of the road
Don't go to the door
Don't go to the door.
(love me some good imagery)

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won

You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice.

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword.

Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

Pretty much the entire last 2:30 of Zooropa

And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing

All of The Wanderer

Mother, am I still your son?
You know I've waited for so long
To hear you say so.
Mother, you left and made me someone.
Now I'm still a child, no one tells me no.

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile

A heart that is open
is a heart that is broken

Also, here's a lyric I really like from a little-known band called Mulehead:

"Well, I fired up my amplifier, opened up my case
A full color photograph of my lover's face
With a note that read 'now, hurry on home'
My lover spends an awful lot of time alone"

There are a lot posted already that I love.  The one below is one I like quite a bit, perhaps not as much as some already posted, but I've always found Bono's darker lyrics like this interesting and very emotional.

My father is a rich man
He wears a rich man's cloak
Gave me the keys to his kingdom coming
Gave me a cup of gold

He said I have many mansions
And there are many rooms to see
But I left by the back door
And I threw away the key
And I threw away the key
Yeah, I threw away the key
Yeah, I threw away the key

Given the criticism of post-Pop U2 (by myself and others), I want to share one that is quite good.  Actually Cedars of Lebanon has a lot of great lyrics, but this final bit is quite good:

Choose your enemies carefully ‘cos they will define you
Make them interesting ‘cos in some ways they will mind you
They’re not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friend

ISHFWILF: "I have climbed the highest mountains, I have run through the fields, Only to be with you, Only to be with you"

So Cruel: "Desperation is a tender trap, It gets you everytime" & "Her skin is pale like God's only dove, Screams like an angel for your love"

Kite: "Life should be fragrant, Rooftop to the basement"

Miracle Drug: "Beneath the noise, below the din, I hear your voice, it's whispering"

One: "Love is a temple, Love is a higher law"

Magnificent: "Only love, Only love can leave such a mark, Only love, Only love can heal such a scar"

IGCIIDGCT: "Every generation gets a chance to change the world, Pity the nation that won't listen to your boys and girls"

THTBA: "It's early Fall, there's a cloud on the New York skyline, Innocence dragged across a yellow line"

Wave Of Sorrow: "Blessed are the meek who scratch in the dirt, For they shall inherit what's left of the Earth"

TGBHF: "Let me love you, Let me rescue you, Let me bring you where two roads meet, Oh come back above, where there is only love"

MOS: "I've been in every black hole, At the altar of the dark star"

RBW: "The worst things in the world are justified by belief"

Iris: "Iris wakes to my nightmares, Don’t fear the world it isn’t there"

UTEOTW: "In my dream I was drowning my sorrows, But my sorrows they learned to swim"

Like A Song: "Angry words won't stop the fight, Two wrongs won't make it right"

OOC: "One day I'll die, The choice will not be mine"

WILATW: "I can't see what you see, When I look at the world"

Walk On: "And I know it aches, How your heart it breaks, And you can only take so much, Walk on"

One of my favorites, love to sing along to this one..........
and hey hi fly!!! :)

"Original Of The Species"

Baby slow down
The end is not as fun as the start
Please stay a child somewhere in your heart

I'll give you everything you want
Except the thing that you want
You are the first one of your kind

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
And I kneel 'cause I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it

Some things you shouldn't get too good at
Like smiling, crying and celebrity
Some people got way too much confidence baby

I'll give you everything you want
Except the thing that you want
You are the first one of your kind

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cause I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it, no
And you'll never be alone
Come on now show your soul
You've been keeping your love under control

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don't have to be shy about it
Everywhere you go you shout it
Oh my my

And you feel like no-one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cause I want you some more
I want you some more, I want you some more...
