I can only do a top 5, really...

1. Pink Floyd
2. David Bowie
3. U2
4. Peter Gabriel
5. Depeche Mode

After that, it gets very murky, with different acts I've liked over the years, but they don't necessarily stay with me every day: Rush, Kraftwerk, Bob Dylan, NIN, Johnny Cash, etc.  And I would say at this point, U2 are there due mainly to what they meant to me historically, rather than what they mean to me now.

In no particular order (except #1) and as of today:
U2
MGMT
Muse
The Catherine Wheel
Beck
Chemical Brothers
Arcade Fire
The Cure
The Doors
David Bowie (although I’m having a strange and peculiar reaction to the song “Blackstar” that’s changed my entire view of David Bowie’s discography for the worse)

Five others who will always hold a special place for me and have appeared in my top 10 at different times:
Soundgarden
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tool
Pink Floyd
Radiohead

Not really keen to do a list but I am perplexed that only one person has mentioned Nirvana, and none at all have listed the Pixies.  Bands like Placebo are a poor man's cousin to the Pixies.  Throwing Muses are also a band that deserve a mention.

Never thought Nirvana were the great legendary band that so many people claim.  I've always thought that grunge was a lazy movement in music, a short post-modern booknote where people just started throwing random words together to create band names and songs.  I think if Cobain had continued to release music, and didn't join the 27 club, he wouldn't be held in the high regard that he is today.
