Love is a temple...

...love a/the higher law. Is this a command to love the a/the higher law, or is this a statement that love is a/the higher law?

I love this lyric.  I've always taken it to mean that love is the higher law.  In Biblical terms, Christ came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it through the higher law, which is love.

That's what I take it as at first glance as well, but then why no comma after love? "Love, the higher law"

I'm not sure why no comma was included.  Someone is a bad grammarian?

It seems pretty typical not to include punctuation in lyric lines.

The official lyrics are full of punctuation, including commas:

Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you, now you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life, when it's one need in the night.
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you baby if you don't care for it.

Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love and you want me to go without.
Well, it's too late tonight to drag the past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other... one

Have you come here for forgiveness,
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got.
We're one, but we're not the same.
Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again.

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should.
One life with each other: sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One, one.

"I can't keep holding on to what you've got...when all you've got is hurt."  This is a great piece of wisdom that I've actually been able to use on occasion in my life.  A true Bono nugget of truth!

I recently thought about this line. IMHO, it is about U2's reaction to highly legalistic societies. Think...USA. You can't park here, speeding tickets, repo of materialistic items. The same kind of place that would incite Michael Stipe of REM to write "You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login". Is anyone catching my drift?

U2 and Bono came from a country that wasn't as highly legalistic as the US although things may have changed since the 70s, 80s and 90s. See 'barbed wire fence reference' from Pride.

An place with excessive 'human/positive laws" leaves little room for the "divine/love/natural laws" of the manner in which humans interact.

I do realize that many will not understand this post.

Bono has made it pretty clear that it's about a combination of the band's troubles at the time and the story of a gay man trying to reconcile with his homophobic father. That said, the thing I love about Bono's lyrics is how they can feel so specific to an individual and at the same time can be so open to different readings. It's one of his most impressive talents.

Didn't realize the lyric had no comma, which could change the meaning somewhat. I love that you could take it either way.
