Ahhh.... I remember this exact day 20 (!!!!) years ago very well.  I took the day off work and was at the record store immediately as it opened.  They didn't have the CD on the shelves yet, so I had to harass someone to go in the back and get it for me.  I was young, and it was during my "Haight-Ashbury phase."  I really wanted to listen to the songs "properly," as it were...  But I lived in an apartment at the time and had to wait for my landlord to come by to fix something before I could burn the incense, and so forth...  Man, I spun this record nonstop all the way through the summer of '97...

Ahem...  to answer the question, I chose "Mofo."  Hard to choose, since there's so many good songs on here.  But there's also songs like "If God Will Send His Angels" and "Playboy Mansion," and a few others which I don't care for.  Those songs always hold the entire album back in my U2antheon.  Be that as it may, I'd love to see U2 let loose like this again.  But 20 years on, I think that's increasingly unlikely.

I can't say enough great things about Gone. It's a monster of a rock song and one that never should have been dropped from their live rotation. Then again, I can say that for pretty much every song on the album.
Agree...that's why it got my vote...there's nothing bad about this song. It is primo rock and roll.

It is for me pretty much the last time u2 managed to do flat out 'rawk' and it not come off clumsy/uncool.
rawk? Raw rock? (sorry...is this a word that I should know?)

No rawk is just a joke expression a play on the american and i believe the metal fans way of saying rock....Well that is my interpretation of it anyway....could be wrong.
Aha. Well, I kinda like raw rock...it fits, yes?
I've always used it as a synonym for the term "faux-rock". You know, like Elevation...

Voted for Mofo.  An innovative monster of a song musically and lyrically.  Gone is a close 2nd.

I agree it's the best when played live.  But I've never been big on the album version.

Mofo narrowly over Gone.

But I will say the single mix of Please is the best track from the Pop era.

Hey, all that I wanted to do was bring a song with true artistic merit to the thread!

I voted for "Last Night on Earth."  I can't quite pinpoint why but it's an amazing song that's in my Top 5 U2 songs.  It just feels like pure U2 adrenaline.

I voted for that magnificent beast of a song, Mofo. Gone and Velvet Dress are close joint second though. I love this album. There are only 3 songs on it that I'm not so keen on - If God..., Playboy Mansion and Wake Up Dead Man. The rest of the album is magnificent. In fact on my mp3 player I've removed those 3 songs, added Holy Joe and Hold Me Thrill Me and it's (for me) a PERFECT album! :-)

It was a tough choice, but "Mofo" got my vote. I love playing it for people that aren't familiar with the band and watching their eyes get wide when I tell them it's U2. I played "Please" constantly when the album came out, and "Gone" got me through some tough times. I'm not surprised that "Playboy Mansion" hasn't gotten any love, but it's an underrated song. I think the lyrics have aged pretty well.

I have never liked "Last Night on Earth." I don't think I ever will. The band tries hard, but the chorus doesn't really take off for me. And it sounds too much like "Surrender" from War.

Mofo
Staring At The Sun
Last Night On Earth
Gone
Miami
If You Wear That Velvet Dress (oh the guitar solo)
Please
Wake Up Dead Man

All in my top 15 U2 songs. I voted for Please but feel incredibly guilty.
