I've always been a bit puzzled by people saying Bono would never be able to sing RHMT now. It's easier to sing than Pride or Bad, and he still manages to perform both of those fairly regularly.

Yeah, but let's be honest: Bono has never really sung Pride properly live. He most just shouts the chorus.

There's some denial going on around here. Guys- it's no offense to Bono. It's just reality. You wouldn't expect Carl Lewis to come out and make the long jumps he could just barely reach in 1987, right? There are a lot of things stylistically Bono has learned these days which he didn't have back then, but the physical limit of his top range now IS NOT going to be what it was back then. And if he could barely even do it back then....
Let's not get all Emperor's New Clothes here.

Not would I expect Max Headroom

The chorus has been left untouched. Bono only re-recorded the verses.

I think they should re release the 1987 video for RHMT. That would really take everyone back to the 80's.

Seriously, if it's being released as a standard single, there should be a video for it. If U2 want to big up an old classic, they might as well go the whole hog.
Better yet, how about they recreate it? Do you think Bono still has those guns to show off?

And there is everyone's answer. Nothing wrong with natural aging, his voice just cannot perform to the levels it once could. Not my favorite albums or era as a whole, but Bono's voice on the JT and Rattle & Hum/Lovetown - was fantastic. He cannot possibly get near those levels again.

Looking back on the interviews from the JT era, it seems that Bono used injuries, (chin/shoulder) as a crutch for playing big stadiums.

Making some hoopla about releasing that video would wring more mileage out of this than anything else.  "Secret U2 lost video found!" Click bait headlines.

Now I'm really confused. Why was this done at all?

POP-era Bono was the closest he ever got to having guns to show off. Thing is, for a small guy like him, it shows when he gains a few pounds. But it also shows when a little bit of muscle is gained.

Sounds good.....and I can hear the horns this time.

Meh. The only differences from the original are the ways it's worse. And the more of the song we get to hear the worse it will be since Bono can't hit those notes anymore. It's weird that they chose the most vocally challenging song on TJT to re-record. But then, Bono doesn't seem to be very self-aware these days

Exactly

U2 said they were doing a lot of swimming to get into shape for Pop tour. Good job to as Bono wore the very  tight skeleton top for some of it.

RHMT Joshua tree version had a fantastic verse and chorus vocal.

Hense its popularity.

Why waste time redoing the verses and than pulling out of the mighty chorus.

Pretty simple. The chorus couldn't be beat. Leave the verse alone already and work on something new.
That vocal fitted the instruments of the time.

I believe Bono has used the phrase "disappearing up your own ar*e" do describe what has happened to other bands before. Occupational hazard.

..as long as we get a new mix for one of U2's classic songs -- then why not!

Looking forward to hearing it live too.

Cheers,

J

Bit late now. But would have been interesting to hear a 2017 version of TJT. May have only taken a couple of months as the songs are already written.

Bono's voice is different but still good. I'm sure after 30 years they would all have ideas on different versions of each song.

It wouldn't ruin the original JT. That's 30 years old & a long term classic.
