I have a feeling this was done to easy the grilling should he not perform RHMT as good as people are expecting on tour. Everyone knows and including Bono that he simply cannot hit the levels on the 1987 version, so it's a wise move to re release it with updated vocals to give everyone a flavour of how he will sound singing it on this years tour. That's my take on it anyway, very intrigued as to how he'll get on with the chorus

Is the full song out there? Or are we reviewing the 1:16 clip

I am wondering the same thing.
It releases on the 22nd, right? That's Record Store Day.

Yeah, but people suddenly started complaining about it as though a leak had occurred or something.

The chorus has been left untouched. Bono only re-recorded the verses.

I'm sorry, but this is STUPID. If you're going to take the time to re-record the verses, do the whole thing. Mixing new verses with the original chorus is ridiculous. Especially THIS original chorus. They may as well have not done a remix.

maybe they are going for a "reach back in time" kind-of-effect where Bono 2017 is singing with Bono 1986/1987.  It kind of plays with the same themes as the Innocence + Experience tour...a then/now thing.  I am going to wait until it's released before I criticize because I have a feeling I will be happy with it.  See, I promised my wife I was going to be a more upbeat and positive person in 2017...so I am going to try and put cynicism aside for the time being.

I don't have a problem with the verse. It sounds fine. What I do have a problem with is mixing his new vocals with his old vocals in this way. The ONLY reason to re-record the song would be to do the chorus again since we know he can't hit those notes...and yet they're re-doing the part of the song that he probably could sing the same as 1987, or similar. It makes zero sense.

Wait. Are you talking about the splice the fan did with the new verse and old chorus?

I think the sell out is the promo video promoting vinyl.
Technically we know that vinyl is an inferior format to cd for example but vinyl for some nostalgic reason in increasing in popularity so I guess U2 are jumping in this bandwagon.  I certainly won't be buying it f it's only on vinyl format.

To be fair I'm not sure he could ever really hit those consistently. Isn't that part of why they never performed it? U2 are known for actually improving songs live, but RHMT is one that can probably never be topped from the studio version, even in the 80s. Still, will be fun to hear and I'm sure it'll sound just fine.

Did someone do that? I'm just basing what I said off of the claim that the "new recording" is just newly recorded verses but the same old chorus.

Sticking the same track on both sides of the 12" is pretty shifty. They could've stuck "Jesus Christ" and "Christmas, Babys Coming Home" on there.

Surely Bono will be singing the chorus an octave lower? He was struggling to belt those top notes even on the original version!

Good point, I wonder why that hasn't been mentioned?

I thought the ending was pretty cool.  Obviously the original will always be better but this is ok
